dont look at diet as something you "go on". diet is a way of life and you have to change your eating habits untill you do that you are not gona be able to lose weight.
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Speaking from experience, the best way to go about a diet is to stick with all the health foods that you actually enjoy. I'll be honest, eating brown rice and vegetables isn't NEARLY as appetising as a fast food burger and fries. If you keep trying to experiment with new foods, your going to find yourself becoming very frustrated when you find out they don't taste that well, and then you're probably going to end up caving in and going back to your old ways. For example, if you really enjoy turkey sandwiches, stick with them! I know it gets boring eating the same foods after a while, but a diet has never been an exciting thing.

First of all, you'll need to realize that a life change is needed in order for any diet to work. It is a pain to stick with them, but I believe all that means is that you're not really ready to change. When you are ready to change, it won't be as hard to stick with it.
I had a hard time sticking to a diet too, but then a Dr. recommended that I read 'The Paleo Diet' and something in reading that seemed to click for me and I've been doing really well sticking with it ever since.
Good luck to you!

The best way to sticking with a diet is to eat smaller portions. Eat a balanced meal. And to also keep a food journal so you can write down what you eat, also keep a journal so you can keep track of your food triggers. And remember even though you go off your diet once, get back up and start over again. It doesn't mean that you failed. We are all humans.
