I live in a small town outside a very large city not known for record or publishing companies. I am in High school, but would like to take every advantage I can to market my music.

Being in a small town, I can't really network with anyone in the industry, so I'm stuck with very few performance oppurtunities and almost no chance of being signed at the moment. Right now, any submissions I could make are unsolicited and will probably end up on a shelf never to be heard.

I would really prefer not to wait until college to be able to have my music solicited to the right people. HELP!

to be solicited it has to be send via a credible agent, music attorney, etc. Try sending your material to some smaller indie publishers.. often they sign you then later sell your contract to the bigger ones( IF your good)... go to amazon and find a book called "The songwriters Market".. it has Addy's and info on thousands of publishers, labels, etc.... tell you which ones accept unsolicited material, etc... good luck.

I work as a band promoter in a small town and work at an all-age venue for local musicans.
The first thing you need to do is play at local shows. I am sure there are places in your town that will let you play. You will need to expose yourself on a local level then branch around your area, then state, ect. Once you have a "following" at local level and you are able to pull in people for your shows the more you will get booked and noticed.
DON"T think you will play one show or that a big label producer will hear that one song and a contract will be handed to you. This is not a realistic goal.

You will also need to record your music and either give out demos or sell CD's at your shows. You don't have to have a professional CD made burn copies from your computer are perfect (yes people will buy them if they like you music I see it every weekend at shows) this means investing in a computer software like ACID pro, Garage Musician (Apple), or Cakewalk. There are many differ programs at different prices.

Websites geared to unsigned musicians such myspace, unsignedbandweb.com, unsigned.com to name a few offer free access to upload your music and promote it.

But all in all it is up to you, you must be able to sell yourself as a musician, go out there and hand out a demo CD to local venues, book gigs, and promote on the web.
