She's had vomiting & diarrhea for 2 days. She's listless and thirsty. We don't want to lose her. She is going to the hospital, but any info someone can provide will help. Her food is not on the recall list.

It could be age related. IT could also be food. The recall list keeps expanding and is into dry foods now as well. You might want to take a sample of the dog food to be tested. One Vet had five dogs among his clientele that all got sick and it happened that all ate the same dog food, Nutra Nuggets, and he had the food tested and it came up positive for melamine and has JUST been added to the recall now. It was only added because a Vet had it tested and sent in the results.
The sad fact is, unless food is tested to rule out contamination, there is no way to know if that is the source or not. I'd say it would be worth checking out.
Here's a site you may want to visit to check out the latest updated list for all recalled foods:

Please get her food tested and if it tests positive for melamine, make sure the FDA was contacted.

How do you have a diagnosis if she's not yet been seen by the vet? Don't make any decisions or take any advice until your vet has examined her, done blood work, a urinalysis, and a fecal examination.

A positive diagnosis is crucial to treating the problem, it could be anything from heartworm to bowel obstruction, to a cancer anywhere in her digestive system. Maybe she ate some garbage and has a raging case of enteritis. All of these have different treatments, and require much more than a description of vomiting and diarrhea to diagnose.

What other symptoms does she have?? Is she kneeling down with her butt in the air and trying to stretch out her stomache? Has she been diagnosed by a vet? If the answer is yes she should be on Prescription Diet k/d which is specifically designed for dogs with kidney problems. Try to make her as comfortable as possible but you might have to face facts that it is more humane to put her down then to let her suffer. As a tech I have seen this all too many times. Once the kidneys are going there is very little that can be done especially in an older dog. I wish you luck and many prayers as I know it is difficult to watch your baby suffer.

Unfortunately, with kidney failure, you can only keep her comfortable for so long. You can put her on a special diet, but quite honestly, you're just biding your time.

My cat was 19 and in kidney failure. The vet talked me into giving her sub-q treatments 3 times a week at home. This treatment consisted of giving her fluids under the skin through a needle. It was not comfortable for my cat, nor for myself. When she wasn't well anymore, I took her in to be put down.

My advice is to keep your dog comfortable for as long as you can. Love her, shower her with affection and spoil her. You will know when it's time.

There are a lot of possible causes for both kidney and liver failure so it's not good to speculate. Fortunately, a good many of them are treatable. Hope your girl is going to the vet soon and that she'll be alright!!

has thee dog gotten into any ibuprofen? that can cause those symptoms. The sooner the dog gets vet treatment the better. If it is ibuprofen poisoning the longer the medication stays in the dogs system the more deadly the out come. I hope everything works out and your dog will be ok.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

The food may have some of the banned ingredients. It seems only Purina was able to avoid the addictive. And they even got some with one of their products. I would take samples of the dog food with you.

check what she ate...numerous sources..household goods..cleansers etc....scooby got ahold of something to make her sick...i know 4 herb tea cures infections and has numerous anti-microbial properties....i'm not sure about liver and kidney problems...those usually aren't reversible unless you caught it in time...i've seen it work on abssess' on a cat...vet bill would have been hundreds and it only cost me $25 for the bottle from herbal healer.com. best of luck to you.
