It usually takes him abut 90 minutes to fall asleep again, and no, he is not depressed/drinking too much caffeine/having pains.

I have an 11 year old son who struggled with the same sleeping patterns. because of his sleep habbit, he was struggling in school to stay awake. I took him to the Dr.s and his explaination is a growth spirt. Boys especially get growing pains. some are very mild.. and some can be very painful.. most often in the legs. He can possibly have very mild growing pains in his legs that can awaken him at night. this is what the dr told me to do. he priscribed him some anti-inflamitories.. and put him on a schedule of exercise. after dinner, me and my son would go for a 3 mile walk. for a boy who is having growing pains, that can be a struggle sometimes, so its better to go at his pace. when we got home, he was tired. I would run him a warm bath. and let him soak in it for about 15 minutes, adding some lavender to his bath to sooth him. The change was almost instant. he was sleeping through the night almost imediately. he woke up , well rested. and the teachers at his school noticed a big difference in his attention at school. make sure he isn't drinking any fluids after 7 pm if his bed time is 10 pm. & no caffeine..
encourage him to join sports clubs. The more active a child is, the better nights sleep he/she will have.

Is he depressed or drinking too much caffeine? Or does he take any medication that could interfere with his sleep?

Does he just get up and use the bathroom or does he stay up? I also know I wake up if I've been drinking too much. I hope this isn't the problem but I don't know your son. Maybe you should take him to the pediatrician if he's tired from not sleeping.

keep him awake until 2 then wake him four hours later....don't let him go to bed until 10 the next night, and he should start sleeping thru.
