Hindu religion is often labeled as a religion of 330 million gods. This misunderstanding arises when people fail to grasp the symbolism of the Hindu pantheon. According to the Hindu scriptures, living beings are not apart from God, since He lives in each and every one of them in the form of atman (BG 10.39). Thus each living being is a unique manifestation of God. In ancient times it was believed that there were 330 million living beings. This gave rise to the idea of 330 million deities or gods. Actually, this vast number of gods could not have been possibly worshipped, since 330 million names could not have been designed for them. The number 330 million was simply used to give a symbolic expression to the fundamental Hindu doctrine that God lives in the hearts of all living beings.

How can we say that there is only one God. The bible thought the Sun was the center of the Universe and there is only one earth. Now scientists are finding millions of earth like planets if not billions. How with all the scientific knowledge they have today, they are not able to say how many stars are there in the universe. Here some one is questioning some 7000 year old saying and belief about 330 million gods. Atleast they are intellingent enough to think that we are not alone in the universe and the concept of mulitple universes is visualized and believed. If that is the case, if Jesus is the messiah to this earth, what about all the earths that are yet to be discovered? So does it mean that there would be a billion messiahas which means a billion sons of god? Please try to appreciate a different perspective, rather than thinking with tunnel vision. No offense, just a different thought.

Heavens only knows and I'd like to read and see what people say about these calculations. To me, 330 million Hindu gods is overkill. It's like the old saying about too many cooks stirring the soup. I like the simplicity of what I do. I answer to one God and He has the power to take care of everything without relying on millions of other Gods to carry out His work. For the power hungry, one amazingly powerful God is a good thing, right?

listen up y'all... most every one of you is lacking in depth of understanding...

there are 330 million Sura's...

and there are 330 million Asura's...

they all live in the same area within our universe " heavenly planets "and they tend to battle over territory...

Whats the difference?

Sura's worship the one true and Living eternal God mostly for what they want but some can, and do, develop true Shuddha Bhakti... pure devotion to the Lord.

And the Asuras have more of a tendency to try to get everything for their own self interest, leaving God as far out of the picture as possible...

There are many personalities and what they do is work... just like every one else. Yes they have lives and family and land and territory to maintain like every living being in the material world...

There are many stories!!!!

one only has to read...

If one thinks them fairy tales... well so be it... but its hard not to just label every thing that is out of our range of historical reference a fairy tale...

Its up to you... but if you are gonna deride one ancient system of belief... why would you not deride them all... there are very few religions that don't date back at least 1000 plus years...

If you are gonna be a pessimist be and equal one...

This is my request.

the title of God as a label to the Deva's... Sura's... Demi God's... is not correct.

Demi Gods is the best term... because they have ruler-ship or control over parts of the universe ( unless one of the Asura's is able to check their power and take their position... this is what the Asura's tend to do)... but not the total universe...

But Sri Krsna has said in the Gita... only fools worship the Demi Gods for tempoay comforts and things...
