Because many Americans are foolish ignorant libertarians whom don't believe in taxation. Much of Europe pays for their health care through taxes, mostly income tax. However, Canada pays for much of their health care through simple sales tax. Doctors and other health care officials in the US are paid waay more than in other countries as well. For example, in the UK, an average doctors salary is around $50,000 a year. In the US it's closer to $100,000. The US government also places no price gouging restrains on the medical industry as well, which is why an ambulance ride is around $2,000 and one night in the hospital is around $350 a night. It's simple economics. The medical profession is very profitable for a reason.
