dont get me wrong, i've used conditioners all my life, but i just realized that i've never really known wat they do. so i decided to test it out, for the past 2 weeks i've only used shampoo and no conditioner, and my hair looks and feels the exact same. so is there actually a purpose for conditioners or are they just extra unnecessary chemicals added to our hair? perhaps they have some kind of long-term benefit for hair?

Conditioners help make hair easier to comb out & provide oil/moisture for the hair.

You probably don't notice a difference because your hair is short & the oils from your scalp are enough to keep it in good shape.

Conditioners are more critical for people who have long or dry hair, color or perm their hair, and/or use heat styling tools. In this case, a conditioner helps coat the hair & make it look more sleek and shiny. It also helps protect the hair from the heat damage.

Conditoner softens your hair. It gives it moisture that makes your hair healthier, long term. If you stop using it for a couple of days, as you can see, you won't notice any differences. But, if you continued for a long while, you might start noticing some change. Reason being, if you've used it "forever" then the moisture and conditioner is sort of "implanted" in your roots. So that's why you haven't noticed!

I think it depends on how long your hair is really- if it has been chemically treated, if you have bleached it or colored/permed it you break down the hair complex during a perm to make it curl or straight. You bleach or color you are taking color from your hair and along with those processes it is extremely drying. If your hair is healthy there isn't any real point to condition unless you are growing it out- it helps protect your hair so you don't have a bunch of broken ends and holds on to elacticity and retains natural oils or substitutes with others- which if your hair is treated ( if you pull on a strand of hair it should bounce- not break- ) when you treat it you lose that elacticity and need to conditioning to protect it. It also helps maintain color treated hair and hold on and gloss up color.

Conditions are used to help "condition" the hair, to make it a lot smoother and give it more volume, as well as give it plenty of vitamins. Pantene Pro V is the ideal example of this; their shampoo washes but leaves your hair very stiff feeling, so you use conditioner to smooth out your hair.

USE CONDITIONER!
