I dont know if it is different for each state, but i live in california, and i was pulled over and given a speeding ticket in my dads car. (im 20 yrs old)This is my first offense. If i go to traffic school will my dad be able to see on his insurance that thre was a traffic violation in his car, or will it just go on my record? Does the insurance send you something in the mail, or just the court? thanks!

The citation is referenced to your drivers license, not to your father's car. Insurance companies know only what is on your DMV record, they don't get notified that you received a citation. Unless you are covered under your father's insurance, even if you got convicted of the offense that would not affect his insurance rates.

If you go to traffic school, neither your father nor your insurance company will learn of the citation from DMV, and it will NOT go on your record. The court will usually send you a notice, though, and those are pretty distinctive. If you live at home and your Dad sees the mail, he may figure it out. You might be able to avoid that if you take care of the matter quickly online (check the court's web site).

Call the Traffic Division and ask them about traffic school. In some States, if you take traffic school, your ticket will be dismissed, and the insurance company will not receive any notice of the ticket.

They won't send any letter or anything... but count on your premiums going up. If you are on your dads policy, when he gets the bill he will know something is up. And when he calls the insurance company, they will tell him the rate increase is because you got a ticket.

If you are not on his policy... then he will never know.

just because you received a citation does not always mean your rates will increase . the insurance company probably pulls a yearly DMV record and will make a determination at that time

It could mean higher insurance premiums for your Dad with an explanation why. You better fess up, it may come back to haunt you later.
