My dad is 60 years old and has a family history of high blood pressure and heart problems. He has been overweight for many years, and this year had what could be considered a very "minor" heart attack. My mom, brother and I have tried many different methods of getting him to diet and exercise - threats, cajoling, rewards, etc. What can we do to make him realize that he needs to change and we are scared of anything happening to him?

take him to doctor to do blood tests and show him whats wrong and what it can cause.
its always better if a whole family starts eating better and not keep any junk food around the house - instead have healthy snacks in visible places.

You can't...You can't help someone who doesn't want to be helped...but you can stop making him unhealthy meals, or having beer or pop or bad foods in the house. Start by having healthy foods in the house along with healthy meals. If he doesn't want to eat your healthy food ....and goes out and eats crap you can't stop him but at least you aren't enabling him to be unhealthy. If you are doing this already than best of luck too you but you can't make someone change unless thay really want to deep down. Justt ask him to go for a walk once in awhile...but not as excecise but just to have a walk...enjoy the scenery or something. And most of all enjoy him while he is here...Good luck

If the heart attack didn't do it, I don't know what will.
Maybe you all need ot do an intervention? And/or start
a walking program together. If he won't go, the rest of you should go anyway. Heart problems can be hereditary.

He has to take responsibility for his own actions. You cannot make him do anything for himself. I would suggest you ask him to take out a hefty life insurance policy.
