Be honest...but tactful, even if it's hard to say, in the long run it can only do him good. Explain that he should make an effort maybe with a smart shirt and some nice aftershave and that he should also be honest with this other bloke about the way he feels. If he doesn't try, he'll never know what he could've been missing out on! And if it all goes horribly wrong at least he can start to move on and stop worrying about it.

Your friend should ask the one person in his circle of friends that he admires as far as style and charisma to help guide him. He could have that person go shopping with him and help him pick out clothes that are trendy, but not so far off your friends style that he wouldn't feel comfortable in them. This friend could also help him with advice on hair style and clean scented personal care products (shampoo, anti-perspirant, cologne) that blend well together and compliment his natural body chemistry.
I had a male friend that had a similar problem that came to me for help, and this is how I helped him. Needles to say... he has much more confidence now.

I hope I have been of some assistance.

Sometimes you have to just come out and say "You bloody well stink"
Being blunt but not in those exact words, usually are more appreciated than letting someone walk around in their daily life with people holding their noses and poking fun of him behind his back. I have actually had to tell one of my employees that they had a terrible body odor and they could not cover it up using all those terrible smelling colognes.
She did later appreciate me telling her, after her first anger emotion.

he ahs to be honest and open with him....maybe people do not want to approach him because of his BO.

Maybe some small ideas, a letter or a card, might just start the relationship off.

Your friend's not going to change until he's ready to. I can't say more than that without knowing details.
