Understand that there is huge difference between "poker sites that will accept money from US players" and "poker sites that are legal for US players to wager on."
Obviously, offshores want your money, and are less concerned with whether you are breaking US laws or not. Best advice is to consult a local attorney. If you can't afford to consult an attorney, you probably can't afford to bet online in the first place.
The situation is, at the moment, murky. Some states even forbid wagering on US venues (legally formed in other states, and possibly affiliated with existing US racetracks). Better to check with a local attorney before risking repercussions from an audit of wagering logs down the road.
There are a number of FAQs about offshore venues and online wagering at:

Some poker sites, such as Party poker and Empire Poker, do not accept US players. However, Full Tils poker and PokerStars for example, does accept US players... for the moment at least!

All the poker sites have both free and pay versions. Generally, if the address ends with ".net" it is free and if it is ".com" it has real money tables. By law, you cannot advertise real money sites in the U.S., so all the ads are for the ".net" versions of the websites.

Americans cannot legally bet on line in any game, especially if they think they can charge it on their credit card. That is a Federal law
