It involves a personal relationship through Jesus Christ. It is trusting in the righteousness of Christ alone and not in any human effort to give us right standing before God. It is also studying God's word and asking the Holy Spirit to lead us into truth. It involves action on our part, not just an intellectual assent.

Even the devil believes in God, but it doesn't get him anywhere. A Christian usually means that they believe in God and in His ways. They see the good that comes from following the teachings of Christ. To really believe, it means you do it. If you don't do what it says, then you don't really believe. Believing comes by seeing, and those who really get it, have seen God. God isn't some out there being that we just have to muster up some kind of belief in. He's real and has made Himself known to us on a personal level.

It depends on the individual, but the Book of James says that merely believing in the existence of God is not sufficient for salvation, since even the devils in Hell believe that.
Believing IN God implies that you trust him enough to obey what he says, because you believe that God simply lays down rules for your benefit, not his.
Put another way, your actions show what you really believe.

Both, when we say we believe in God, we mean that we are putting our complete trust in Him. Sort of like when a child runs to a parent in fear and clings to them.

Christian: The root word being "Christ." The word Christ when translated back to its original Hebrew means "Messiah" or "Savior" or "The one who saves."
Interestingly, Jesus' last name is not Christ as many tend to suggest. He is rather Jesus, 'our' Christ, or Jesus 'our Savior', or Jesus 'the one who saves'. Hence the shortened "Jesus Christ."
To call ones self a CHRIST-ian is to profess that you believe in Jesus as Savior, the once and for all atonement for all man's sins according to John 3:16.
To believe in anything more or less than what Jesus taught is to believe in something other than Jesus and therefore you would not be right in calling yourself a Christian.
