Why isn't it mandatory that students take Spanish?

Most schools have make it mandatory that kids take a foreign language but then they let the kids choose what language they want.

You probably took something useless like French or Italian and now you have to know Spanish to get a good job. Don't you wish they had made you take it earlier so you wouldn't have to take Spanish classes now?

Because this is an English speaking country and we dont force anyone to take any language. It is a choice that is allowed to the students. English is mandatory. but another language is optional. You want Spanish mandatory go to Mexico. The schools here offer german, spanish and french among others. My son took German and he has a good job and a good life. Speaking spanish does not always equate with being successful.

Its only a waste if you allow it to be one. I took spanish in HS and college. Although I never had an opportunity to use it until I moved to Chicago, but now I speak it all the time. Its come in handy a few times knowing a little spanish.

But I meet people all the time who are Italian, French, German, and I can't speak a lick of their language, but I'm sure they'd be impressed if I could.

And Spanish speaking people are still the minority to English speakers. So, thats why its not mandatory. Whens its the other way around things might be different.

While I do think that a bilingual populace would increase the net intelligence of this country, and I think that Spanish should be taught to children (I live in a latino neighborhood, am one of mybe five white people on my block, and it pisses me off that I don't understand what people say to me half the time) If you are educated, you will never be asked to speak Spanish as part of your job. In fact, I work in biological research and it has always been the other way 'round. I have worked with immigrants from many many other countries, and they are not allowed to begin their jobs until their English is at least conversational.

Actually, I took 5 years of Spanish in middle & high school (Spanish was the only one offered past 2 years). I also took 4 semesters of it in college as electives. In addition I took 2 semesters of Italian and 2 semesters of Latin (Latin is extremely useful for History majors, and it reinforced my Spanish & Italian). I just choose to speak English.

Because this is America and Americans speak English, not Spanish. You seem to be very unaware of the fact that that's the way it is and will stay.

No, not really antis suck. I took French in HS and in college and I was able to communicate enough when I went to Paris last December.
I already know Spanish though. If I hadn't, I would have taken Spanish before I took French.
