I been asking about this same question for the longest but this time I'm going to be more in depth. I have a 93 jeep cherokee laredo and it has about 184,425 miles (a lot i know) 6cyl 4.0lt . I was driving it and it was fine then it started to act funny. when I was at a stop light it would go until like a few seconds after ( wouldn't acclerate). I then found out when I stopped the car to park and wait for my friend while the car was on it was acclerating by itself. Then I found a leak from the front of the jeep. Now it only goes in reverse, so one told me to put more fluid and I did that and it started to smell like something is burning. I think my husband might of put too much fluid. Anyways, I scared to drive it , but got enough courage to try and it went forward for a minute(because I was on little hill probably)and then eventually would go just ONLY in reverse. SOMEONE HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had a 93 Ford Ranger that did the exact same thing. Cost me $2500 to have the transmission replaced (new, not used, or rebuilt).

Basically the reason it goes in reverse is that the transmission oil pump and the torque converter have enough pressure to move the vehicle in reverse due to the fact that reverse is closer to the oil pump and torque converter to have enough force to move the truck, but not enough pressure can build up to get the vehicle to move forward, or even shift gears.

Hi...firs of all is it a manualand do you get other gears ore only reverse... If so does it go uot of reverse...if not then you have a problem with your gear syncro's...It meens they are worne out and need to be replased...but there could be anoter problem...The clutshplate might be stuffed...to test it you can start your jeep and see if it takes gears an then drive around for a while till it starts up again and you dont get any gear... Then switsh of the jeep...Then see if jou get gears when the jeep is turned off...If you get gears when the jeep is turned off then it meens you need a new clutsh plate and presure plate....Test it out and c if it works...

Yep definetly is the transmission, be very careful driving it can get dangerous, soo fix it quick, it must maybe a leack on the transmission fluid. But while you are there, get your spark plugs checked, get a new gas filter, and get your engine compression and see if there is another problem affecting your car too.

If it's an automatic, it may be that your torque converter is going bad due to the milage and wear/tear on the vehicle.

Either way, bring it to a transmission shop and have someone check it out.

Plain and simple your transmission has gone bad. Take this vehicle to a reputable transmission shop. It may take more money to repair it than what it is worth.
