I have seen this behaviour many times, both at the bird waterer and they will carry the feces to a puddle in the road and drop it in or near the water.

This is a "fecal sac" that they are carrying away from the nest. All birds do this. They drop it away from the nest so as not to attract predators.

Do not fear, this is very common blackbird behavior. Blackbirds do this to keep other birds away from their potential drinking water. It's similar to the humanoid phenomenon of spitting on food to prevent other humanoids from eating it.

Unfortunately, though somewhat clever, blackbirds are also incredibly stupid as they end up drinking water contaminated with their own excrement. This has led to several blackbird plagues over the last 6 decades.

I believe they are cleaning out the "poop" from their young birds from the nest. I have seen the same behavior in blue birds that live in my blue bird house. I think they clean thier bills after dipping in water on the edge of a branch or even on the birdbath.

they are cleaning the nest and come to your water feeder to get it off their beak.
