I had an engagement party last year and i did not ask for gifts, but since i have a very giving Italian family they all brought cards with cash. I did not expect anything and they were so generous. I actually made $5,000. Me and my fiance' put it in an account and used the money for our deposit on our reception hall. I of course sent Thank you cards out the following day thanking them all. But technically you do not have to bring a gift, but i am also giving like my family and I give cash!

You don't have to, but if you're like me, you also don't want to be the only person not bringing one. If you know others who are going, ask if they plan to. Or, do something smaller from the couple's registries, if they have them. Think of their situation or of something you might like...do they have a house? Do they like to travel? Some token of encouragement and congratulations...chances are, if you're going to the engagement party, you'll go to the wedding. The engagement is about announcing and celebrating the plan to marry. A small token of recognition is nice, but don't feel pressured to buy some extravagant gift...the couple will be happy for you just to be part of the celebration with them.

A nice wedding picture frame with a picture of the couple is a very cute, personal and inexpensive gift idea.

strictly speaking etiquette wise; no.

after all, it's just the pre party for the actual event- the wedding.

I recall another bride to be asked me this and still had a wishing well posted for gifts of envelopes

I've never been to an engagement party. But if I were to go to one, I would probably bring a bottle some champagne and a set of toasting glasses for the bride and groom.

i had an engagement party once (we never got married) but no one brought us gifts and i never thought twice about it. I do think a bottle of wine would be nice though and you can do a merlot for 8.99

Depends on the custom - where I live cards with money are given, the purpose of the money being to help the couple pay for the wedding.

No, gifts aren't necessary. You could take along a bottle of wine...
