Faith is knowing that something is true that can't be scientifically tested.
Things such as love, we all have faith that love exists, but love can't be "proven scientifically".

You can also have faith in someone/something and proof is just as important as not having proof.
For example, I have faith in my fiancee & my family because they've PROVEN to me that I can trust them with my faith in them. Faith in something that doesn't exist for no reason other than some book says you should is not logical nor intelligent.
In my book, faith is reserved for the ones who deserve it. Those who show that they can be trusted, and that they will not take your trust in them for granted are the ones who deserve the faith. Not some invisible sky daddy who's never shown himself & the only "proof" of his existence is a book that was written when people believed that EVERYTHING was created/supported by gods/goddesses. The christian god is not the first & is not the only god to come out of those days. There's a pack of greek, pagan, hindu, muslim, etc...... gods of all kinds from the minds of people from all walks of life.
gods are nothing more than explanations for the inexplainable. We can now look at a sunrise and instead of thinking "it is how god wants it" when trying to explain why it happens..... we know that the earth is revolving around the sun and the earth is rotating on it's own axis to make it look like the sun is rising and setting. We have knowledge. Knowledge and religion are two things that do not mix well together for you must abandon one to gain the other.

like the good book says, "faith, hope and love...and the greatest of these is love." i've found that faith without love really is merely a shadow of hope. and hope without love is simply probability. faith is my answer to almost every question about belief, religion, God, etc. either "side" and go on ad nauseum about God or the lack thereof. It's simply a matter of choice. No one can either prove nor disprove the existence of something beyond reason, beyond faith. Therefore, I put my faith in God and Christ, because life is beyond reason.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we can understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Nobody knows God. What you think you know about God is from what other people think or made-up. Faith can be hazardous....as some problems require action, which if not taken, could result in disaster. This "faith' trip you are on is a result of brainwashing and religious fanaticism.

My faith in Jesus Christ has delivered me from a life of sin and death and given me a hope and joy that no person could ever give. As the song goes, I once was lost and now am found; was blind but now I see. I experience the love and peace of God daily, even through disappointments and trials. God is forever faithful and I choose to trust and obey. Thanks for the good question.

I trust anyone until they prove me wrong. People have let me down but the worst violater of trust has always been me against myself. I will not list all my broken resolutions......they far outnumber broken promises made to me by others. I have grown old and a little wise and come to understand that to judge others is to judge myself. My faith is like a sixth sense, like a dog's ability to smell or to hear things beyond human range. I am in the middle of a miracle when I watch the sun set or hear and see the waves break on the shore. I hear and see angels when a choir sings. I see God's helping hand when the world responds to natural disasters. His voice is every song ever written or sung. Nay, I am not deaf nor am I blind in this wilderness.....this beautiful Earth.....this wonderous cosmic creation. Faith is trust without proof and like anything else, to get better at it, you must practice it. And as you get older, in time, you will come to hear the whispers that come not from your mind but from within your spirit.

My experience has actually been different from yours.
I found that putting my faith in individuals was a mistake, like you, but that putting my faith in God was equally confusing, because learning his will was impossible. In the end you have to choose a human, either through written word, or spoken word to dictate God's will to you. Therefore you are still relying on humans for your faith.
I found that by choosing not to believe in God and building my belief on science, I am less often lead astray, and have a solid base of reasoning to build my beliefs on.

I have faith in my family.
Has anyone seen the pictures of the family that was trying to run from the tsunami. A father and his children where playing in the ocean oblivious to the tsunami that was coming. The water started to recede. The mother who was on the beach noticed the water receding. She was trying to get the attention of her family. They did not see her, so she started to run towards them to help them. She finally got their attention. The family was trying to run to safety as the wave was approaching. The wave swept them up and killed them all. The children where 4 and 6. I DO NOT HAVE ANY FAITH IN GOD.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
I put my trust in the Lord. He will never let you down. Things may not come when YOU want them but it will surely come on time. God's delay is NOT a denial.
