Hello..Flea collars are just a waste...a constant poision in contact with the pets, they can cause serious reactions & illness in the pets, specially if you have more then one dog or cat when they wrestle & bite the flea collars ... flea collars are just worthless, unsafe... & no good !! There are better, safer, non posionous ways to deal with them ... like vacuuming, grooming...sprinkling carpets with 20 mule team borax before going to bed, then vacuuming in the mornings, etc..but flea products are a profittable market for vets & stores, so they push them ..we have 4 dogs, 2 cats & few flea problems..you can control them, but you can never get rid of them all !! Take Care :) Too funny tho..is how ppl used to call me nuts for not believing in flea collars, etc ..so am luvin this LOL !!

Flea collars are notorious for not working.

There is a comb available at a good pet store that has very slim and close together teeth, like a comb for nits. It will pick up the fleas and loose dead hair as well.

Dipping the comb in a bucket of hot soapy water will contain and kill the fleas, if you like.

I prefer to crush the flea against the tooth of the comb, then I don't have to wonder if the flea could flee.

If you have a really big problem, use a gentle liquid soap (I like Ivory dish soap for this.) or any dog shampoo (A flea soap is not necessary.) Soap up the dog well and keep the soap on for at least 5 minutes and up to 10 minutes for an infestation. Repeat if necessary. This drowns the fleas and the dead ones can be removed with the comb. Any live ones can be crushed.

This is a no chemical and very low cost procedure and you are going to brush or comb your dog anyway, right?

I've been able to keep up with the fleas using these procedures. Good luck. I hope that your dog is able to be inside with you. Flea control outside is very difficult.

I think Frontline and other once-a-month remedies work by actually getting into the dog's body and keeps the ticks and fleas away for 30 days or so. Flea collars are more like wearing pesticide on the neck.

My vet told me that the fleas have become immune to the pesticides that you can by at the drug stores, so now we use the drops from the vet. They really work well. I think it is just a waste to use the collars because they are ineffective. She probably took it off the dog, because if you used the drops he doesn't need the collar.

First of all it's Flea, not flee. To flee is to run away from something. If you put a flee collar on your dog, he might run away. If you put a Flea collar on your dog, it might just get caught in something and choke the dog before you can free him. I had a dog who tried to get his flea collar off, and caught his paw in the collar. Gladly I was home to free him. Maybe that is why you should not put a Flea collar on your dog.

SOme animals react badly to them, some dogs have eneded up with cancerous spots where Frontline has been put for years. It all depends on the animal.
All my animals have been fine with tick and flea collars, perhaps I've just been lucky.

Because flea collars contain chemical poisons that not only kill the fleas, but seep into your dog. And for that same reason I wouldn't use Frontline either. Healthy dogs don't get fleas. Feed your dog a raw diet, and you'll never see a flea.

The concentration of chemicals on the flea collars can cause really bad reactions, even seizures and death. They are unsafe and not recommended, just as flea spot treatments from stores are unsafe and not recommended.

Flea collars are ineffectual and give you a false sense of security against fleas. Frontline or Advantage are the only 100% protection against flea infestations on your pets and in your home.
