Actually, the opposite is true.
"...Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt." (Leviticus 19:17)
Also
"If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.' If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector." (Matthew 18:15-17)

People do that as part of their nature, the sin nature. It allows us to convince ourselves that a sin is not a sin, that's how far out that we are from the truth.
That being said, our task is not to stop sinning! Our task is to trust God. He's the one we look to in order to bring us to the truth. Those that are harping on sins of others constantly would do good not to think that they themselves are so perfect. Because the fact is, they are not perfect.
We have an extreme form of that 'self righteousness' here on Y!A. They are commonly referred to as "Fundies". They pick on specific sins of others. What the Fundies have done by adopting such a manner is take their eyes off God and placed their attention on eachother, expecting a perfect 'cookie cutter' lifestyle. In the meantime, the sinner is left to think that they must make themselves more like the Fundie, and have their attention totally taken away from the God who promises salvation.
