I think that bad things can happen to anyone. Good or bad. It's just that people notice more when it's a good person that something bad happens to, as it's more unexpected.
When something bad happens to a bad person, we usually think nothing of it, as it is almost expected, we don't care as much about that person or we subconsciously feel that they deserved it and brought it upon themselves.

I have found it is true that those trying to lead a good and pure life are often made to go through some difficult times to strengthen and test. If you examine the bible, there are many examples of the faithful being put through some hard times while being tested. I like to think of it this way. People who can respond to crisis with dignity and grace are of stronger character than those who respond with anger and resentment towards God.

Because by definition bad things are only bad from a certain point of view (money falls from the sky- its good for the people catching the cash, but bad for the person who dropped it), and good people are only as good as everyone thinks they are... for example: some people may call George Bush a good person- I call him an a$$hole.

Because there's evidently no "God" sitting up there making sure only good things happen to good people.
Nature is not "just" in any human conception of the word.
If a man drinks poison, he dies. The fact that he may have been a "good" man, or that the poison may have been placed in his drink by an "evil" man, makes no difference. But it's also true that "good will" and "ill will" are forms of energy that must be compensated. It doesn't follow that the poisoner will himself be poisoned; the consequence of his action need not announce itself as such; but for every action there's an equal and opposite reaction. That's what "karma" really means - it's not "automatic justice."
P.S. - But I'll personally compensate all the kneejerk thumbs-downs from religious lemmings. lol

We are tested with good and bad .... it is the way of this life ..... how would God know whether we believe or not ... if He gave everyone whatever they wanted.
The awards will be given to those who will be patient in times of wealth and health AND in times of sickness and poverty ....... both of these are tests but most of us don't realize it. Having, is a test and not having, is a test .... i.e. this LIFE is a test ...... the "Other" life which is to come will be the place for enjoyment .... IF we pass this test ..... otherwise ...... well lets just say it won't be enjoyment :-)).

And the corrolary to this is, why do good things happen to bad people?
Here are some possibilities:
1. There is no God. This sort of fallacious thinking does not stretch beyond itself and supposes that God must do what we think He should in order to exist.
2. God is not all powerful. See point 1, but substitute "be all powerful" for "to exist."
3. God is not loving. See point 1.
4. God is not all knowing. See point 1.
4. God is accomplishing something by it.

Because of sin - Satan and 1/3 of all the angels got kicked out of heaven for rebelling and they're doing all they can to cause pain and suffering to God's children. God is allowing the devil to show himself for who he really is, but some day Jesus Christ promised He will come and put an end to the suffereing. St John 14: 1-3; 1 Thess. 4

That's life. Everyone has both good and bad days. Sometimes God will test our faith. Remember there is a rainbow at the end of it.

God doesn't promise us that bad things won't happen. The difference is, we know where to look for help and encouragement. We must have faith that God is in control. Everything happens in His perfect timing according to His perfect plan.
