My US passport expired. I am traveling on August 2nd. Do I need to use the expedited service, or will the regular service have the renewed one back to me in time? Thanks.

Trust me - it's not worth the headache and stress of submitting your application with regular service. The additional fee you have to pay for an expedited service is a small price to pay for the comfort and security of knowing that you have your passport in hand.

Keep in mind that it's the start of the summer travel season so there's going to be a lot of people submitting their applications now.

You still have time if you file soon.

One hint I have learned to get a bit faster service is to give a departure date that is about 2 weeks earlier than when I am actually leaving... I don't know if that still works or not since I still have a couple of years to go on my current passport, but it DID work the last time I renewed.

It's taking about 12-14 weeks currently. Sounds like you need to pay extra and get it expedited.
