Your verse listed above is a little different than the King James Version I have, but basically the same:
21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
The words used in the verse are symbolic. I read a book that has the answer explained in detail:
Taken from pages 442-3:
There are very, very few mortals who do not fit into one of the categories of abominations John outlined in this verse. In each sin, John has presented figurative equivalents as the opposition of Christ’s teachings:
Those who are “fearful” know better than to treat others as they would not want to be treated:
The “unbelieving” who see mortality as their only beginning and end, and want to make the best of it (according to their fleshly lusts and desires) before they die, care little for others or the earth on which they live. ...These “unbelievers” also include those who believe in God, but judge others, condemn others’ lifestyles and beliefs, and in many other ways violate the Royal Law:
Those who are married and lust after another in their heart are adulterers, just as those who hate others are “murderers.”
The “whoremongers” described here are those who perpetuate and support the “whore of the world,” or she with whom “the merchants of the earth commit fornication.” There are no business ventures instituted for profit among the societies of the earth that promote Christ-like values.
The “sorcerers” (religious leaders, spiritual gurus, self-help promoters) sustain their glory and lifestyles from their advice and counsel. The true counsel that can lead to everlasting happiness is offered by Christ for free.
The “idolaters” are those who worship those things made of “wood and stone” as has been previously explained.
The world is filled with “liars” who spread gossip and unsubstantiated rumor, or outright lies against another to fulfill their desired personal agenda.
Once the premise of equality has been established by the rule of the“Word of God,” those who have lived contrary to this law will suffer great remorse and embarrassment...
Those who continually refuse to change their ways and subject themselves to this new rule of law, will experience the “second death” and be removed from this solar system forever.
You have to read the book to understand it all. It is absolutely amazing.
You can download the book for free on their site or buy it from Amazon.com. It's called "666, Mark of America..."

It's means the same thing as what Jesus was saying in Matthew 5 and practically everywhere else in the bible. Unless you have the covering Jesus provided, you will not be accepted by him. To get the covering you must trust him. Otherwise anyone else who lives on Earth is guilty of something, and they will not enter into the rest that God provides.
So if you have ever lied, you are guilty. If you ever had a thought in respect to adultery, you are guilty. Revelation also says, " Blessed are they who have washed their robes". How to 'wash a robe?' And why wash a clean robe? It is through Jesus Christ that we must be saved. No other way.

Everyone whose name is not written in the book of life will be cast into the lake of fire ( 20:15). The lake is explained in chapter 19:20. The second death is spiritual death meaning either eternal torment or destruction. In either case, it is permanent seperation from God.

Just what it said.
8. the fearful--Greek, "the cowardly," who do not quit themselves like men so as to "overcome" in the good fight; who have the spirit of slavish "fear," not love, towards God; and who through fear of man are not bold for God, or "draw back." Compare Rev 21:27 22:15 .
unbelieving--Greek, "faithless."
abominable--who have drank of the harlot's "cup of abominations."
sorcerers--one of the characteristics of Antichrist's time.
all liars--Greek, "all the liars": or else "all who are liars"; compare 1Ti 4:1, 2 , where similarly lying and dealings with spirits and demons, are joined together as features of "the latter times."
second death-- Rev 20:14 : "everlasting destruction," 2Th 1:9 Mar 9:44, 46, 48 , "Where THEIR worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched."

The Bible speaks of two types of death, the first is physical death of the body and the second is the death of the soul in Hellfire.

It means that they are going to hell. But, when unbelievers accept Jesus Christ as their Savior, they are reborn again and made new creatures in Christ. They are therefore able to partake in the inheritance that God promised to us, through Jesus' death on the cross. When you are a believer and you sin you only need to sincerely repent. The only unpardonable sin is unbelief.

People that continually do these things will receive this judgement. All those who may have done these things but changed, repented, turned away from these things and believed in Jesus Christ will be spared.

This fear refers not so much to physical cowardice as to lack of true faith as evidenced by public commitment to Christ. The final, unchanging, refusal to believe in Christ as Son of God and personal Savior is the only ultimately unforgivable sin.The "abominable" are those who practice abominations--that is, the blasphemous and licentious practices associated with idolatry. "Murderers" are those guilty, not of manslaughter, slayings in warfare, or self-defense, but of willful criminal homicide. "Whoremongers," in the meaning of the Greek pornos, refers not only to pimps but to any who practice or promote sexual activity outside of marriage.
The "sorcerer" (Greek pharmakeus) is one who uses drugs to induce pseudo-religious fantasies and occult experiences. "Idolaters" are those who are devoted to any object, spirit, person or practice which replaces the love of God in their lives. "Liars" are those who practice deception and falsehood, especially false teachers.
