If you feel uncomfortable with a physician of the opposite sex, simply change to one of the same gender. In an airport, you have no choice but to be searched. As with police, they are trying to make an uncomfortable but necessary situation as comfortable as possible. Hopefully you are not getting strip searched and probed at the airport.

At an airport, the security officer is performing a check that may be required for you to enter the plane. Although you have made a decision to allow yourself to possible be checked when you purchase the ticket, it's still a bit of a compulsory check. If you were to be searched by law enforcement, it's required that any type of personal examination be conducted by a member of the same sex, or at the very least, with a member of the same sex present.
However, it's a person's voluntary decision which doctor to use, and therefore, a doctor can choose to go into a field where he or she would regularly examine members of the opposite sex if he or she so desires, since their patients are truly the ones who will be making the decision whether or not to utilize the service.

At the airport, body searches are part of an official requirement. You do not choose to be searched, you are subject to them. So, in order to remain proper, the search has to be done by the same sex.
As for your doctor, it is your choice whether you want a male or female doctor. If you do not feel comfortable being examined by the oposite sex, then you have a right to say so. Besides, the reason for the examinations in both cases are very, very different. One is about what you have on your body, the other what is going on in it... :)

When an male doctor gives a female patient a pelvic exam, another person - typically female - has to be in the room. So it isn't like he is given free reign to touch and feel you. Even female doctors have to have someone else in the room when touching a female patient's "parts".
Plus, it is your choice as to whom your doctor is, and there is a code of conduct amongst doctors and nurses. When it comes to people working detectors at airports, the airport doesn't want to take on that liability.

You choose the doctor you want to see. At the airport they have you checked by a member of your gender to avoid any sexual harrassment charges and it's just appropriate.

Actually my male doctor has a female nurse in the room with him if I'm not completely dressed, so I don't know what to tell you.
