Not knowing why, I would say no.Your dvr needs to communicate to be able to up load programing or how else would it know what to record.WalMart sells a cheap dvr and I would check into this option instead of trying to cheat your local cable company that is I am figuring what you are trying to do.Good luck

Did you get the DVR from the cable company? If you did, you are probably out of luck.

Best solution: Go get a combination DVR/DVD-R, use the DVR to record stuff to watch later, and the DVD-R to archive selected shows.

Your machine HAS to communicate in some manner with the cable company; however, I don't belive that the company will be "tracking" what you watch/tape (unless you are planning to pirate content, in which case, yer on yer own!)

Best solution - get a stand-alone DVR. The one I bought (from Pioneer) has a DVD-writer too; so I can take my favourite ("keepers") and write them to DVD so I can (a) play them anywhere and (b) not fill up the hard disk.

It also allows me to edit (delete commercials, etc.) and once on DVD, it's standard technology, I can read it into my computer, etc.

The newer stand-alones have a way to receive TV guide info (in the USA) and configure your channels, so it can tune automatically. Not as smart as TIVO (the ultimate) but not tied to the cable company.

The cable company wants to talk to your VCR to be sure you are authorized for certain channels. the fact that they can follow your viewing habits, disbale certain recordings, and maybe prevent some commercial skips, etc. - bonus.
