Always beg the question - anyone who repeats the "10%" canard might in fact be guilty of using only 10%.

The % usage is basically immeasurable and meaningless because we use different parts of the brain for different functions.

It is also unproven (or at least not unequivocally) that the mental powers of those who do puzzles last longer than those of people who do not do puzzles. The basic finding of such studies is a confounding factor - the people who do puzzles voluntarily generally start at a higher level of brain activity.

Additionally, the benefits of fish oil or flax seed oil (omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids) are still under study - no definitive proof.

The value of meditation is that it might prepare you for unusual situations or help you be relaxed enough to handle somewhat more than normal; meditation might be the only item on your list considered to boost brain power.

I like Mars bars and caffeine; most stimulants will *temporarily * increase your ability to do mental or physical work. One caveat is that if you use a stimulant for studying, you need to replicate that state when taking the test (i.e., you have to use the stimulant when you take the test).

Some would add hyperbaric oxygen treatment to your list but I would not.

Finally, I agree that doing puzzles will help preserve what you have but many people would say you're pretty much stuck with what you started with.

Sorry about that.

It's amazing to me how many people rely on common knowledge and haven't the slightest clue about scientific evidence on this topic.

It's said that you lose it if you don't use it, so I guess that any form of mental stimulation would help boost brainpower.

Crosswords, boardgames, reading, intelligent conversation, throwing away the calculator - all ths kind of activity is useful, but I think the brain needs to be 'stretched', so, LEARNING has to be a major factor - especially something totally new. This will really make you think, concentrate, remember, reason, observe etc. and give the brain a full work out.

It is not surprising that the elderly people who attend day or evening classes are often very bright and alert individuals, still enjoying life, and are interesting to talk to. I'm sure their thirst for knowledge helps to prevent their brains from stagnating.

You can increase the activity of various neuro-receptors which in turn can allow for memory recall and formation to become a smoother and easier process. There is several drugs, called nootropics, that work as cognitive enhancers.

The most prolific ones are those of the Racetam chemical class. These include Piracetam and Aniracetam. You can download a PDF at http://www.smartdrugsforthought.com/piracetam-research/ that covers all of the Racetam chemicals.

My advice, educate yourself in as many disciplines you can master. I believe a breadth of experience and knowledge, to call upon, helps in problem solving. One exercise I use is to solve each challenge in at least five different ways. You then can develop a hybrid answer using the best aspects of each solution. Also, be wary of your cultural biases, they tend to prevent you from considering more radical ideas. Another thing is to capitalize on other peoples ideas, be sure to properly credit them.

Do more crosswords and puzzles to challenge your mind.

Also, you can try out video games that are aimed at boosting brain power, like "Brain Training" and "Brain Age" for Nintendo DS

You listed some good techniques. They say doing crossword puzzles helps, or learning a language--anything that uses your brain seems to encourage its biological health, kind of like exercising your muscles.

By learning something COMPLETELY new to you, you force new neural connections to be made. REpeated engagement in already-mastered tasks can not accomplish this goal.
