This has been bothering me, how come milk expires earlier in NYC than everywhere else?

I purchased milk a couple of days ago in Manhattan and it says SELL BY MAY 26, IN NYC MAY 23. That’s on every milk regardless of the brand.

How come milk expires earlier in NYC than in NJ for example??

Does any one know?

Maybe it takes longer to deliver it into the city, so you get the stuff that's been sitting in the warehouses for a day or two longer.

New York City is the only place in the state and one of relatively few in the country that has its own dating system for fluid milk, which may legally be sold only up to 96 hours after 6 A.M. on the day after pasteurization. The rule is the same for whole, skim or low-fat fortified milk.

The reason is a lot of the places that sell milk in NYC use the open cooler units that aren't airtight and milk will not stay as fresh longer.

it may desire to count on how a lot older the milk indoors the carton with the oldest expiration date is than the greater desirable modern carton of milk! If there is largely an afternoon or 2 distinction, than i does not difficulty approximately it, yet mutually as there is lots greater desirable that i could desire to declare the two fragrance it first and if it does not stink, you're probable incredible, yet mutually because it smells even the slightest bit humorous, TOSS IT!

Cities may regulate the time for a product to become bad. It depends on climate, transportation and other issues.
