Mitsubushi Pajero 2.8 Turbo Diesel 25-30mpg Very reliable just had mine serviced cost £103 check out www.pocuk.co.uk to see what other owners think. Its the best and most reliable 4x4 I've owned far cheaper to run and much more reliable than Land Rovers.

I currently own a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with 190,000+ miles on it 4.0L inline 6 engine full time 4WD and average 23MPG city/26-28MPG highway. Goes anywhere, and very reliable. Only major work done was replaced the radiator at 186,000 miles due to a little offroading mishap. Replaced starter at 188,000 miles apparently they don't last forever. Other than that no major problems. Oil/Filter changes every 3,000 miles, transmission service every 55,000 miles.
Great in the snow, and ice. And mud, and sand, well pretty much wherever you want to go it will get you there.
I occasionally tow with this Jeep also, and have towed a 24 foot car hauler with a full size Ford Bronco on it without problems. I wouldn't suggest doing that all the time but it can do it if need be.

Ive got nothing but good things to say about my old Frontera. It does everything i ask of it. Its safe on the road and it wont stop off road.
... and no, it doesnt guzzle gas, it returns an average of 30MPG and burns cleaner than a supermini. Which brings me onto...
The plurisy... no... Prius. What an ecological time bomb that is. Can you image what those huge toxic batteries will do when they start to degrade? Oh, and the average MPH figure you get in the real world is no higher that 45MPG. I cant get my MPG figure that low in my Smart.

If you go with full-size, Either the Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra will work. Compact trucks I like my Ford Ranger that gets 21 MPG. American trucks are cheaper to fix but Japanese vehicles are more reliable.
