Depends on where the report is made. Generally they would take the report and a detective would follow up on it. May take a while to catch the bad guy, but they will make the effort.

Usually, it's a very long, extensive process.

They take the report, get all necessary information like bank account #'s, credit card statements, etc. Then they just start following leads. They track down where the thief used the credit cards, debit cards, etc and then they request a video from that venue. If fraudulent checks were written and they have suspects they begin comparing signatures. All this takes awhile but the Police definitely work hard to find out who's behind the theft.

Having just taken a case like this yesterday:

My agency completes a police report and then provides the victim with a myriad of information as to who they should contact, ie Credit Reporting, credit card companies, etc.

The law enforcement agency will work hand in hand with the companies individual security departments in an effort to identify the offenders then prosecute.

Best wishes.

They will either have you go the police station or send an officer to you, they wil get some information from you, and about a week later you will be able to pick up a copy of your police report.
