Someone had answered me before letting me know that I can take out both subsidized & unsubsidized student loans at the same time. I checked witht he school and they said: We have received all of your request for the additional unsubsidized loan, unfortunately you do not have any more financial aid eligibility for the 2006-2007 academic year (which includes unsubsidized Stafford loan).
Now, I did not take out an unsubsidized loan and I did not get the maximum amount according to the guidelines. How do you think they came up with that? I just don't understand where they are getting their figures at. I only had a small portion of the subsidized and it was only used in the spring quarter. Community Colleges start financial aid in the summer and end in the summer. I am getting ready to enter a new financial aid year. I had asked about the spring quarter.

Thank you for your answers. I really appreciate the kindness. I talked to my financial advisor and that is all she would tell me. She would not give me any other specifics. Actually some of them in that office are not very nice.

You can only receive aid up to need (cost of attendance minus Expected Family Contribution). While unsubsidized loans are not need based, if you have a 0 EFC you may have reached the total cost of attendance before that, which is why your subsidized loan may have been truncated before you reached that maximum, which is basically what you are saying the school told you. Also if you are a dependent student (cannot answer yes to being married, have a dependent child of your own, have a prior Bachelor's degree, in miliary service, or are an orphan/ward of the court) the amount of your unsubsidized loan is limited to the grade level maximum amount with no additional unsubsidized loan except under very specific conditions when your parents cannot borrow. Also, if you are in a certificate, rather than a degree, program, federal regulations limit you to the first year loan limit amount regardless of whether or not you take more than a year to complete the certificate.

OK without seeing your file there could be numerous reasons first off are you a dependent student? If so you only qualify for a portion of the sub and unsub and it equals the max of the sub for your grade level. If you did not attend in the fall and are only attending in the spring then you might have reached the cost of attendence for the school and are not eligible for any more funds regardless of the type. If you attended another school you might have used some of your eligibility at that school as well. If you have questions you need to walk into the financial aid office and ask them specifically to show you why.

If you are a dependent student per the FAFSA, you are not eligible for an additional unsub UNLESS your parents were denied a PLUS Loan. If your financial aid is at the cost of attendance, you would not be eligible for the additional unsub (dependent or independent) because we cannot give federal aid over the cost of attendance. Sit down with a financial aid advisor at your school for an explaination.
