A religion? It's a food preference. Oh wait, is this the one where people don't eat plants that have faces and feelings? Or something? I'd have to find out what veganism is first.

Well, it depends on why the individual chose veganism. I have a friend that is a vegetarian because he is missing key bacteria and enzymes in his digestive tract that help break down meat, he would LOVE to be able to eat meat but it would literally rot inside of him and give him food poisoning. He is most definately not skipping eating anything for religious reasons.

On the other hand people who don't eat meat because they don't want to be part of killing animals probably do fall under the heading of religion. I say that because they are basing their decisions on belief and faith, not on facts or logic. The simple fact of the matter is that eating animals causes less animal death than a purely vegetable diet.

As you can read in my sources,

"Animals of the field are killed by several factors, including:

1. Tractors and farm implements run over them.
2. Plows and cultivators destroy underground burrows and kill animals.
3. Removal of the crops (harvest) removes ground cover allowing animals on the surface to be killed by predators.
4. Application of pesticides."

Approximately 220,000,000 more animals per year would die from the US alone converting to an all vegan diet than die from a traditional diet.

No. A vegan is just a vegetarian who omits all animal products from his or her diet.

Not a religion, but a way of life - a choice if you will.

No, it's just a word used to describe a strict vegetarian diet (no milk, eggs, honey, meat - no foods harvested from animals in any way)
