Straw man alert. I don't know any liberals who push Islam, neither do you. Keeping yahoos (sorry, yahoo!) like you from burning and vandalizing mosques is not the same as defending Islam as a belief system. Liberals believe that people should be free to believe in and practice any religion they want, so long as they don't harm others. At that point, it becomes a matter for law enforcement, not the inquisition. If that were not so, we would have locked up the Christian fundamentalist loonies, snake handlers, etc. long ago.

I do admit to being curious about Islam because I--like many liberals--have a certain amount of intellectual curiosity. Also, if conservitards hate it, it deserves at least a look!

Good Question.

We liberals believe that everyone has the right (or liberty) to chose how they want to live. Being a liberal means defending the rights of the individual, it doesn't mean that everyone has to be like us. We must be tolerant of other's beliefs and life choices, even if they depart from our own value system.

Now, if one's life style (religon for example) is being imposed upon others, and therefore depriving those oppressed individuals the right to make their own life choices, then we have a problem.

For Liberals, the rights of the individual MUST be placed first. Live and let live. So, in many ways, the Liberals are the Conservatives best friends. We will defend their right to live as they chose, as long as they don't try to impose their values on us.

There is a big difference between tolerance and acceptance.

Well, I am a left-wing liberal, also a Christian. And I have to say, I have never heard any liberals pushing Islam. I myself will defend Islam to the extent that all people have the right to believe as they choose, especially in a country where we supposedly have religious freedom.
I agree that Islam has a history of oppression, as well as terrorism, and I can defend neither of these things.

I am fairly left wing and very liberal, but I don't support Islam any more than I support Christianity.

Much less in fact as Islam is actively dangerous. Their culture has never experienced any reformation.

But I still criticize the Bush Administration for lying us into Iraq. We had our hands full with Al Qaeda and we should have concentrated on them instead of letting them go.

Now Al Qaeda has a terrorist playground called Baghdad.

Unfortunately, what you are looking at isn't all of Islam, but fundamentalist Islam. Much like fundamentalist Islam is fundamentalist Christianity, which is much the same. Many Christian churches tell us that women aren't to speak in church, or teach men. They would brad homosexuals as evil. How different is this from fundamentalist Islam?

Do you not think that if the fundamentalist Christians held more sway that homosexuality would not be illegal? Do you not think that women's rights would still be struggling?

The only real difference between Islam and Christianity is that, at present, the moderates in Islam don't balance the faith as much as moderate Christians do here.

Look at the United States some 250 years ago ... where witches were killed. It's happened in the past that radicalism held power, and it could happen in the future.

The point of defense of Islam is not to defend the actions of the radicals, but to acknowledge that religious pluralism is important. The ability to worship how one chooses, or, for that matter, whether or not to worship at all is a fundamental right.

That liberty itself would limit the power of a religion to impose itself uniquely on a group. Permitting the expression of religion, without allowing any peculiar faith to control the government is what liberty is about.

How can Islam be a cross between two CHRISTIAN groups? Not to mention that women have equal rights in Islam. Homosexuality is a big topic in Islam as it is across the world, you can't single out only a single group of people when it's such a broad topic.

Personally, I have many friends who are homosexual or bisexual, as well as many friends from a variety of beliefs. They like me the way I am and I like them the way they are.

You're not understanding. Liberals are defending the rights of all religions to be treated equally, not persecuted at the hands of anyone (including Christians, who seem to make the persecution of everyone else a Christian past time, then scream "persecution" when those people protest their behavior). If thats supporting Islam, then so be it.

It seems to me like some liberals are using the old adage "an enemy of my enemy is my friend". The right wing/conservative side is very much against Islamic extremists and currently the left wing/liberal side is very against what is happening on the right. So the liberals sometimes seem they would rather embrace the Islamic extremists than side with their political opponents.

For some leftists, Islam is the religion of the oppressed, of pure countries exploited by the rich West. So they support the oppressed and Islam together with them.

Of course they are wrong. They should oppose oppression, should help develop these underdeveloped countries. But the road is though education, abolition of religious bonds, especially of the Islam.

For the same reason that we campaign for your freedom of speech, despite your impressive and continued determination to waste it.

If someone is abusing women, gay men or whoever, then there are already laws to deal with that. Clamping down on whatever club they happen to be involved in is unnecessary and opportunistic at best.

BTW - I dislike all religions equally, but the fact that I don't like 'em doesn't mean you can't have 'em.
