There are far too many reasons why a cat might lose hair - ringworm is one of them, less common is mange but I believe that is possible, poor nutrition, he might be pulling the hair out himself, alopecia and I'm sure there are many others. Not even a qualified veterinarian with years of experience could diagnose him across the distance without seeing and perhaps taking labwork, so any answer you get here is purely guesswork. I understand how difficult it is to get a feral cat into a cat carrier, having helped my mother do so for a feral cat she had taken in during a snow-storm. I hope you can get some help, even call the humane society, they might have some suggestions. But please do get this cat to a vet.

He could be allergic to flea bites. I had an Alaskan Spitz that lost large areas of hair on her back because of fleas. When she was treated for fleas the hair grew back.

sounds like ringworm to me also.. or your cat is stressing over something, as that can cause baldness especially in the back of their legs..and also thinning on the back hair..

It could be ringworm, as Megglez suggested. Or it could be mange, or even malnutrition if some other critter is getting his food. If you can, you should take him to the vet.
