I woke up this morning at 8.00 am and my cat (female), who is usually miaowing at the conservatory door to be let in for her breakfast was curled up sleeping on the sofa in the conservatory. I shook her food box and she did not budge, even when I put the food in her bowl, she did not move. I picked her up and put her in front of the food and she would not eat it. She looked very down and no matter how much I fussed her I could not get a purr. The second time I picked up her she just growled at me. She can be a bit grumpy though sometimes. She walked into the lounge and went to her favourite chair and curled up looking very upset indeed. I put prawns in front of her and she actually got up, turned around on the chair and put her back to the food. It is now 2.45 pm the same day and she still will not eat food or purr. I have contacted the vets and told them that I will give her 24 hours and see if she comes around but until then, does anybody have any ideas what may be wrong?

Our cat did the same thing one time, she wouldn't eat, she hid under the bed all day long and was very anti-social. It ended up that she had a massive hair ball that she was trying to expel and it was upsetting her stomach. After that we got her some Laxatone and brush her twice a week instead of once b/c she has very long, thick hair. Definately take your cat to the vet ASAP, but also watch out for hairballs....they can make a kitty very sick.

Hi Daniel,

I'm sorry to hear that your kitty is not very well. She definitely isn't well, as cats only go off their food for one reason, and you did the right thing calling the vet.

See how she is in the next few hours, but if she looks worse, just take her to the vet today. Vets are happier to see cats in the early stages of problems than the late stages.

It could be all manner of things really - from a simple tummy upset or hairball to something more serious. Are all her injections up to date? (regardless of whether she's an indoor cat or not)

See how she is this afternoon hun and if she's still not eating anything and if she feels hot or cold or appears even worse, take her to the vet today.

xx Emmie

p.s. you haven't 'offended' or 'pissed her off' - cats aren't humans! They don't operate the way we do. They are either content or discontent. She is discontent and unhappy about being stroked because she is not feeling well, not because you've done anything wrong xx

Cat Not Purring

Personally, I'd probably wait a little while, subject to checking her claws to make sure they're still sharp. If a cat gets hit by a car the claws will be blunted as they try to grip the road surface. If the claws are scuffed take her to the vet immediately. Otherwise, I'd give it overnight but take her first thing tomorrow if she's still not eating.
In some ways not purring may be a good sign as cats also purr when they're in pain, not just when they're happy. It's also a good sign that she's sleeping in the open and hasn't hidden herself away from you - cats tend to try and find somewhere quiet and away from people if they're feeling really bad.

Hope she's ok, let us know. Good luck,
Pud x.

I think you should take her to the vet after 24 hours, no harm in being safe.
In case it is a hairball, buy some liquid paraffin in the chemists, pour a little onto a tissue and dab it on her front paws. She will lick it off while grooming herself.
Tempt her with her favourite foods, e.g. prawns/chicken/tuna/whatever (one of my cats likes cheese).
Keep an eye on her and give her lots of opportunity for cuddles - maybe she isn't purring because you unintentionally offended her somehow.
Hope she turns out to be fine!

If a kitty is not eating, and is in fact turning away from her favorite food, there is a problem. That's how I knew Shadow (then my oldest cat) was probably in the final count-down.

There are a huge number of things that could be wrong, from a simple virus to a tumor in her chest or abdomen. I suggest you not wait.

Good luck.

Many cats can be picky eaters and it could be as simple as a change in the brand of food you give her (this is quite normal). I don't know your situation completely, or your cats temperaments. But I would suggest a veternarian visit immediatley, as it could be something way more serious.

Well cats are creatures of habits. They usually keep a tight schedule so, I think I would just take her in to be on the safe side.

how old is your cat? she may have had a cat fight and have a small infection somewhere.. if it is cold there.. she may have been snuggly and warm to move.. or is she fixed? cause she maybe due to have babies.. otherwise that is a guessing game.. just see your vet in the next 24 hours
goodluck

I'd take her to the vet today just to be on the safe side. Tomorrow she may be showing signs of sickness and it could be too late and irreversible. Best to be safe than sorry...
