My husband got a splinter in his finger 2 days ago and thought it was all out. Now his finger is swollen so there must be something left in there?

there's an ointment called ichthamial (not sure of the spelling) otherwise known as black sauve. it's over the counter, but ask the pharmacist. it will pull whatever is in there back up to the top of the skin and you'll see it to pull it out. it's been around for decades or more, and it really works. i keep a tube around the house always.

It could have just swelled as a result of the "trauma", or there may be some splinter left in there. If the second is the case, the swelling is the bodies natural defense. The finger is swelling in order to "fester" the splinter out. Give it a day or so, soak the finger in warm, soapy water (make him do the dishes :) ), and the splinter should come out on it's own. If the finger gets really red, or you notice a red line beginning from his finger up into his hand/arm, or if the swelling doesn't go away in a few days, go see your doctor. He may need antibiotics if this happens.

Drawing salve became successful during the period of widely advertised medicinals and balms of the late 1800s. Catchy slogans, bright packaging, and sworn testimonials from satisfied customers littered the old-fashioned pharmacies. The line between medicine and fraud was not as firmly drawn as it is today. However, this salve, otherwise known as Black Ointment, or Icthyol Salve, was an effective blend of herbs, roots, extracts and oils, which actually serve to soothe skin.

Ichthammol Salve is a popular one.

If you think that it is still in there, try bacon fat. Cut off a bit of bacon fat and wrap his finger in it. Keep it on for a few hours and then remove it. You should see the splinter then. Also, the bacon fat helps to reduce the swelling. This is an old trick my grandma taught me.
