The real culprit for many people gaining weight is the absorbtion of a food additive called trans fat. Look at the labels of foods that you buy and see which ones contain this very unhealthy ingredient. Many fast food companies use it although it seems there are some that are moving away from trans fat to something that is, at least, less corrosive to one's health. So, buy foods (organic, if possible) that have very little or no trans fats to lose body fat, and eat lots of fresh fruits, mushrooms, and veggies cooked in olive oil, cannola oil, or sesame oil.

An animal study showed that drinking daily green tea for long periods of time reduced belly fat by 75% compared to no green tea. This isn't tested in humans yet, but we can all look at the green tea nations and see for ourselves.
High fiber foods like oat bran are helpful, and are low calorie.
Stress is also associated with increased abdominal fat. Try to reduce stress, add relaxation, and learn ways to make life easier and more peaceful.
