I got a cramp in my calf, and two in my foot while swimming. Is this because of dehydration, not enough magnesium, iron, laziness,....? Everyone says something different. I get cramps a lot usually when I wake and stretch or swim.

The usual cause of muscle cramps is dehydration. You are right on track thinking this. I recommend you drink purified water mixed with mineral water 50/50. The minerals are going to replace what is being taken out Of you through exercise.

Although there are varying opinions, I suggest that adults and children drink 40 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight every day. Realize that exercise, ambient temperature, and state of health affect the water needs of your body. . One tip for athletes: it is healthier to drink a sports drink or water than fruit juice, soda, coffee, or milk during competition or active training periods

Muscle cramps are typically due to an insufficiency of calcium or potassium. Increase your take of dairy or bananas. Chew tums for calcium. You can take potassium as a pill if you don't like bananas. Tonic water has so little quinine in it that you would have to drink gallons of it a day for it to be medically effective and is really more the treatment for people who have cramps in their sleep.

for starters, you should always stretch before you move a lot. when you get a cramp it's from lactic acid buildup, which means you're probably not breathing right. when you get a cramp slowly stretch that muscle (i know it hurts, but it's necessary) until it's limber again. if it still hurts later, try either motrin or Tiger Balm, which is a really good ointment that you rub on sore muscles. you can get it at wal-mart.

Cramps can come from over work, electrolyte imbalances and dehydration. Which one fits you? Try increasing you pottasium intake- oranges, bananas, potatoes- or salt intake. Drink lots of fluids- water and gatorade. Always stretch slowly. use warm compresses if they are painful.

A low amount of potassium can cause cramping as can a low amount of water in your system. Stay hydrated and try natural foods high in potassium before anything else.

If you drink some tonic water regularly, it will help stop cramps due to the quinine in it. I hope this helps !
