As long as its beef bones you will be fine. Beef bones don't splinter like pork and poultry bones. For an alternative, store the bones in the freezer and give them to your dog frozen. These are lolly-pups for my dogs.

Give the dog a bone! All these people talking aout how dangerous it is.. They only say what they have heard and do not know the facts. FEED RAW MEATY BONES! They are safe. Safer then the MILLIONS of products recalled recently wouldn't you say?
You wil never hear of MILLIONS of raw meaty bones harming a dog.
I have fed nothing but a raw diet for the last 4+ years. Never had a dog to choke and they are healthier and luckier then any kibble fed dog.
You are doing no harm. Infact ditch the bag and feed your dog raw meaty bones 100 percent of the time. LOTS of info available on raw feeding on line.

Ignore any and everyone who says raw bones are dangerous. They are clueless and have never researched. They think kibble and man made bones have been around for 10's of thousands of years and don't realize that before the 60's, this is what dogs lived on. Perfectly normal for a carnivore to eat raw meaty bones!!

Splintering bones and choking... It just doesn't happen like people want you to believe. Dog food companies and vets use ths as scare tactics to either sell food or say it just because they don't know or don't understand or are to lazy to look at the history of the dog and the facts on his diet. If bones were so dangerous, dogs would have been extinct a million years ago. HELLO!!!

I don't think it would be that harmful as long as you know the butcher..but to get a smoked one once in a while would be good..sometime a cooked bone is safer then a raw bone and why it's cause it wont splinter..but dog eat raw bone from when time began..just make sure he/she doesn't get worms..pork bone and chicken bone are the kind that do the most damgage to a dog when it does splinter..beef bones are a bit safer..

I know what you're thinking, in the wild, dogs, and their relatives eat raw meat and chewed on the bones of their prey. So, why not let Poochie chew on raw bones now?

Well, bones - even shank bones from the butcher - can splinter and puncture her stomach or intestines. Repairing a punctured stomach or intestines is a really risky, expensive and not always successful operation. It's also a slow and painful death. Do you really want to take that risk?

It's best to use a synthetic product like Nylabone or Kong that won't splinter.

Plus, you can stuff the Kong with peanut butter or cheese etc. for hours of play.

There is nothing wrong with feeding your dog raw beef bones. Just avoid chicken and pork. DO NOT cook them! Not only is it possible for them to splinter but they will also loose most of the nutrients. Make sure you worm your dog a week or so after giving him the bones!! Raw meat does have the potential to give your dog worms. Edited: Rawhides are not good for your dog in any way, shape or form. Not only are they hard to digest but they get soft when chewed on and can easily get longed in the dogs throat.

I always gave my dogs raw bones from the butcher in the winter but in the summer, I boil a bunch of them and keep them in my freezer til they are ready for a new one. Giving a dog a raw bone in the summer was a fear because of flies and maggots. Winter time was no concern. Its not that much trouble to boil a box of them and freeze til needed and they sure do love you for it when you pour the leftover broth over their food.

Its fine to give your dog a raw bone everyday. It helps keep their teeth clean and healthy, also helps with their digestion.

I have always been told by numerous experts in the pet industry to only give your dog hide bones such as rawhide and beefhide. Real Bones can hurt their insides.

yes!!!! it is very harmful
i have a pomeranian and whenever he steals some chicken bones from the bin, he pukes a lot after a few days
but raw shanks are even bigger than chicken bones
you should stop giving your dog raw shanks, especially everyday
you don't want your dog to puke, do you?

My vet said to NOT give our dogs bones. They can splinter and get caught in their throats. So my vote is "better safe than sorry"--don't give your dog a bone.
