I am worried about a few things. I will be supplied with kit but do they supply underwear?...Do I get to wash it myself? if not will i get my own issued underwear back from the laundry? I have a problem with wearing another guys underpants.
Anyone been in the army who can tell me, I went to a question and answer session this week but I was too embarrased to ask.
cheers

In the Brit Army there is the usual laundry service. However, you might want to learn to do some of your own laundry yourself. Also learn how to sew and darn and yes even knit. It's all part of being a soldier. Gotta keep yourself looking smart.

First thing you need to do is get to work on them boots. Shine them up like mirrors and is bullshine etc.

You are issued all your "kit" in the US Army including underwear when you first come in. After that you are expected to replace your "kit" from your clothing allotment. That is a monthly stipend your will receive with your pay.

You can wash it yourself or sign up for Quartermaster laundry for a small fee.

Yes you get your own stuff back.

It will be a good idea to label everything (not already labeled ) with your name. Avoids confusion etc. Good luck, you are starting on what can be the greatest adventure of your life. I spent 30 years in Service and while there were some very unpleasant times I would not trade the experience for all the money (or anything else) in the world. There is something about being of and with soldiers that makes all things better.

the only underwear they issue is cold weather long johns and vests in green so take plenty of your own, the camp your on will have a launderette or there may be some avaliable in the accommodation blocks.
you do all your own laundry as in washing and drying and ironing which you will be taught believe me youll be an expert by the end.
good luck and well done youve chose an admiral career just remember dont believe everything your told though as its not all good and from the start you will find that out but 2-3 years down the line youll be loving it.

Don't know if the pongo's supply undies, since I'm in the Navy and we don't, but I'd suspect they don't. I've seen some pongo's in their skivvies and if those things were issued... :) but you'll get everything else from the combat boots upwards. And you will be washing and ironing the lot yourself unless army basic's got a hell of a lot easier since my mate Mike did it a couple of years ago.
Best of luck, mate. It's probably gonna be a shitty job if you're planning on joining an infantry regiment but you'll make mates like you wouldn't believe, and you'll be able to trust the vast majority of them with your life.
And just remember this when you've been kicked out of bed and told you've got five minutes to get into your kit and head off on a five mile run.
Training is all bullsh*t. And it ends. Enjoy it as much as you can. Have fun, mate. :)

PS Don't bother with half the answers on here, they're from Yanks and they do things totally differently.

First your recruiter should answer these questions for you. But You buy your own supplies that you will need and they will give you a list. Your laundry goes out in a laundry bag with your name and comes back in a laundry bag with your name and in most facilities you will have a washing machine that is used on Sundays mostly, But I do suggest guarding your clothing. Oh and for every cycle you will go to the PX to buy needed gear(underwear etc.) and everything you need will come out of your pocket. In cluding your first purchases, they advance your first check. Good Luck and remember Mind over matter.

During your first couple of days, you will be taken to the px where you will buy those raunchy brown undies. Also, you supplied w/ this giftcard thing...which is deducted from your first paycheck in order to pay for the stuff at the px.....
You send the laundry off in your own bag once or twice a week....You should receive your own bag back w/ your own underwear......

Wearing other peoples' underwear is GROSS! No worries... You'll be fine.

You will get all of that. Yes you can use the army laundry service, which isn't too bad. Or you can take it to a local launderrette, as I used to.
Also you can wear whatever you want under the uniform.
Of course things may have changed a little since I was in, but I doubt if it has altered too dramatically.
Good luck to you.

I honestly can't tell you about the British Army, but in the US Army, you are issued underwear. While in basic, you do your own laundry, and when you get to your station you have the choice of doing your own laundry or having it done for you at the Quartermasters. While deployed, you're laundry is washed for you at the Quartermasters.

The only TRUE way to find out if your own underwear is to write/sew your name in them.

It's an understandable worry, I wouldn't want to wear another guy's underpants either. But don't worry, I think it's in the army's best interests to have every soldier in his own underwear! You will get army issue socks, vests and pants, but in the case of underpants, you are allowed to take your own with you, just make sure they're easily recognisable, or sow name tags into them. As far as laundry is concerned, I can promise you'llbe doing your own!
