beatlefan I can see why you would say that story is a metaphor, but it just seems to me that "it is a metaphor" is a catch-all for things that otherwise could be highly questionable.

it's a stupid story bent to explain to ignorant (not stupid, mind you) people why there is different language on this planet. supposedly everyone there started speaking an entirely different language than everyone else, so there SHOULD be that many different jewish populations with that many different languages, and all of the black people, and everyone else that was deformed by god's irrational wrath, should speak the same language, and nobody should be able to learn any other languages than those known by their own parents.

It's a metaphor, where someone was trying to find an explanation for why there are so many languages, and communication problems in the world. They figured that people must have all been able to communicate the same way at one time, and tried to reach heaven by building the tower, and God caused them all to start speaking in different languages, in order to keep them from being able to communicate effectively, and so with people being unable to understand each other, they were unable to finish the tower to heaven, and reach somewhere they weren't meant to go yet. It was as good an explanation as any, at the time, and also a metaphor for there being no shortcuts to heaven, as these people were looking for one by building the tower.

The Tower of Babel is a great story. Babel was supposed to be the first city built after the Flood. The ruler of Babel, named Nimrod, declared himself to be God on Earth and wanted people to worship him. Josephus recorded:

Now it was Nimrod who excited them to such an affront and contempt of God. He was the grandson of Ham, the son of Noah, a bold man, and of great strength of hand. He persuaded them not to ascribe it to God, as if it were through his means they were happy, but to believe that it was their own courage which procured that happiness. He also gradually changed the government into tyranny, seeing no other way of turning men from the fear of God, but to bring them into a constant dependence on his power…

He ordered the people to build a great tower, or temple-like structure, from which they believed they could reach Heaven. The pride and wickedness of the people was great. If allowed to continue, they would destroy themselves and those around them.
In order to impede their progress, God changed the language of the people, which was one, into many languages. Being unable to communicate, the people ceased building the tower and ended up dispersing throughout the land.
Legends hold that Eber, ancestor of the Hebrews, was righteous and did not have his language altered. The Book of Mormon tells of a group, led by Jared and his brother, that prayed to God and likewise were allowed to keep their original language. This group was led by God to come and inhabit the American continent.

The deal is that people tried to build a tower to heaven but God got pissed because none of them had a mullet so he mixed up their languages and they bailed....we were never closer to God than in the 80's

God purpose was for man to fill the earth, but man had another idea. They wanted to stay in one place and build a city with a tower so they can worship their own god.........well God confused them by messing up their language so they had to leave and spread out over the earth.
