This can be a very hard thing to do!!! This is one way a dog says hello!!! What when your puppy does this she will be smiling when she does lick you!!

Our 17 week old Lab puppy does the same thing. They are still babies and they will grown out of it in time! Just try not to get your face down to where your baby can do this to you!!!

She doesn't understand that you think this is a bad thing. Probably when she was younger you let her do this then???

I do I did!! I still do but our puppy really doesn't do it that often. We don't put our faces that close to her mouth our puppy is still going through the chewing phase!!

I would just try and keep your face away from her. Use a stern no repeating many many times a day!!

Good Luck

Licking (rather than biting) is very much a "pit bull" thing. They are wonderful lickers.

Lick-Lick-Lick-Lick-Slurp-Slurp-Slurp-Slurp-Sniff-Sniff-Sniff-Sniff-Snort!

I personally don't have any problems with my pittie licking my face - He's been known to jump 6 feet high to lick someone's face.

But others don't share that view. And I respect that.

First thing - find a good obedience class. Teach Pittie her basic commands. This will go a long way to establishing you as the pack leader. Your leadership is important.

If you're observant, you can spot when she's getting ready to jump up and lick. Catch her just in the act of jumping and put her in the "sit" position - telling her firmly "Pittie, sit. Stay." When she sits and stays sitting, pet her and tell her she's a good girl. If she tries to lick your face/hands/etc. correct her with her collar and tell her "Pittie, stop." The word "no" should not be used as it's too broad a command - no what? No cookies? No jumping? No ball? No run in the park? No peeing in the house? "Stop," on the other hand means stop what you're doing right now (in this case, licking - but it could be jumping, barking or just being bouncy).

This takes time and Pittie will probably always be inclined to lick - it's a Pitt Bull thing. Pitties lick.

Oh yes, Pit Bulls take up to 3 years to mature and mellow out. My pittie just turned three - and has only just now started to mellow out. Up until now I threatened to change his name to Mr. Bounce!

My Pit was very oral also.

I had to make the decision that one day this behavior needed to stop and everyone that deals with her needed to know it stops.

When she would go to lick my face or someone elses a firm "ahh ahh!" was given and turn away and leave the dog. Ignore it completely. Walk away/turn away. Than replace with a desired behavior. Sit/down - Treat/Reward and praise. Repeat - repeat - repeat. Replace the behavior that you don't want with a behavior that you want and reward the good behavior.... if your always saying no the dog will not learn what to do, but if you say no and than teach the dog and reward them they will learn extremely fast!!

Good luck!!!

Does she have to jump up to get to your face? If so, gently raise your knee to his chest every time, which will block him from getting up too high. As you do so, firmly say, "NO." If you're consistent, she'll eventually get it.

If you really get stuck, you can check to see if your local humane society or rescue organization will help you train her a bit. You really want to stop this sort of behavior now, before she gets to thinking that she's the master, not you. That opens up a whole other world of problems.

Learning how to train your dog will improve your life and hers, enhance the bond between you, and ensure her safety and it can be a lot of fun. Dogs are usually eager to learn, and the key to success is good communication. Your dog needs to understand how you’d like her to behave and why it’s in her best interest to comply with your wishes.
