I live in China for four years now and what vivet said is wrong you can smoke in China anywhere i say again ANYWHERE in restaurants on the roads in the parks trains even in taxis Ive seen people smoke in McDonalds and Kfc ive smoked on the Great wall but you have to hide Ive been offered cigs in taxis by the drivers they dont take no as an answer dale jai said dont carry things in one hand again wrong ive seen people do this only bow your thinking of Japan not China Ironche you can hold touch people for the opposite sex believe that maybe none of you been to China oh well peace

I think because China is such a vast country with a huge population, it is possible for other people to have very difference experience from yours. On the whole, smoking ban is not enforced in public places. Even if it is, a lot of people still ignore it because there're not enough police to enforce the law. True about Chinese people insisting on your acceptance of cigarettes or wine or beer if they offer it to you but if you say you're not supposed to smoke/drink/eat something for health reasons, I suppose people will not be offended. About touching people of the opposite sex, I think discretion is still the rule. Some people are much more easy on this but others can be very uncomfortable, especially if you are a man and the other person is a married woman. I think shaking hands generally doesn't cause any problem for the ladies but be careful with hugging and kissing. This is usually reserved for people with whom you either know as a very good family friend or are romantically connected. Good luck!
