You go straight to jail. If she is given a suspended sentence then she will only go to jail if she commits another offence.

If you're in UK, a prison sentence for driving offences is very unlikely unless your friend is a habitual offender or else he caused a fatal accident and left the scene. Otherwise, he will get points on his license and a fine. In UK, if you are given a custodial sentence, you have to go that minute - even if it means losing all your possessions (left in my unattended council flat) as a result as happened to me. I was not expecting a conviction because I had drugs planted in my luggage in Jamaica and I was therefore innocent of the charge of "being KNOWINGLY concerned ...". But I was convicted and lost everything

LOL, sorry I had to laugh. Trust me, she'll get off easy. My ex-boyfriend has about 85 criminal cases, mostly are small stupid stuff but lately he's been stealing cars, etc. The most they ever give him is about 3 months in the county jail.
If he can be so stupid and get away with all that, you're friend will surely get away with at worst, perhaps a small fine and a day in jail.
BTW: The only time you go to prison is if you have a sentence of a year or longer.
Oops, I didn't notice you're in the UK. I'm just talking about Washington, USA

You don't go straight to jail, if you are not a 'flight risk' and have special reasons youe can sometimes be alowd home.
But mostly they hold you for a while whilst everthing is sorted

The penalty of imprisonment will send the convict to the jail and there is no time to go home.

Straight away in normal circumstances - don't base your fact on US cases - they operate differently over there

i don't think you can go to prison in the UK at the moment.
I think the last prison space was taken about a month ago.
