Look at the lyrics to this verse. It’s a blatant attack on believers kneeling before a non-perceivable entity!

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.

that's a great song

I think it's more about being a free-thinker than merely an atheist. There are a lot of atheists who aren't free-thinkers, just like there are a lot of people who claim to be religious who aren't free thinkers.

to correct the moron above me, Paul Anka wrote this song (and a million others) and The Chairman of the Board (ie Frank Sinatra) sang it and made it tremendously popular. Later, Elvis sang it., as did the Sex Pistols and U2 and a million others.

Hi Desiree, Yes I believe so and did you know that in one of the last interviews Sinatra gave he admitted that of all the songs he had recorded this one was the song he regretted the most.
Another two song springs to mind that are in the same vein as this; Bette Midler(From a distance) and John Lennon(Imagine) but given time I could probably think up a lot more.

Ode to Atheism? While I don't completely rule this out... I don't think so.
It is the Ode to "Self Actualization"- The "do whatever your HEART desires" movement and "Self Esteem" movement. It never ceases to amaze me at how people just want to celebrate themselves. I know people who will sit around and say how great they are and how they are so good at doing this or that. When it comes down to it, they spend more time talking about it than doing it. When they fail, they blame. They blame other people or the imperfection of the situation in which they were working. Very pathetic if you ask me.

We kneel to people with power right throughout our lives, and we keep our mouths shut so we can keep our jobs and have money to live.

Interpret it as you may, they are great lyrics though. But I highly doubt it is about atheism, though maybe, we all do question our faith. And Frank was always battling his demons, he sought confession with the Pope who refused him.

From A Distance is an atheist song, Sentinel? "God is watching us" is an atheistic line??

Tell that to Bette, a very faithful Jewish woman.

Sinatra's an alcoholic maffia boss! Of course it's an athiest song.

might as well be, it's very self-centred, egocentric and the Sex Pistols sang it much more entertainingly anyway. They gave it heaps!

Anyhow, there was a question through here earlier today, 'what's the opposite of egotism', and someone replied 'love', That was nice.

I find a lot of song lyrics to modern songs to be atheistic, i.e.forgetful of God and promoting ignorance, etc. Bob Marley was a theist, but um, yeh, er, i forgot, lol. The New Zealand National Anthem is Theistic:

God of nations! at Thy feet

In the bonds of love we meet,

Hear our voices, we entreat,

God defend our Free Land.

Guard Pacific's triple star,

From the shafts of strife and war,

Make her praises heard afar,

God defend New Zealand

Men of ev'ry creed and race

Gather here before Thy face,

Asking Thee to bless this place,

God defend our Free Land.

From dissension, envy, hate,

And corruption guard our State,

Make our country good and great,

God defend New Zealand.

Peace, not war, shall be our boast,

But, should foes assail our coast,

Make us then a mighty host,

God defend our Free Land.

Lord of battles in thy might,

Put our enemies to flight,

Let our cause be just and right,

God defend New Zealand.

Let our love for Thee increase,

May Thy blessings never cease,

Give us plenty, give us peace,

God defend our Free Land.

From dishonour and from shame

Guard our country's spotless name

Crown her with immortal fame,

God defend New Zealand.

May our mountains ever be

Freedom's ramparts on the sea,

Make us faithful unto Thee,

God defend our Free Land.

Guide her in the nations' van,

Preaching love and truth to man,

Working out Thy Glorious plan,

God defend New Zealand.
