yes this is cruelty. Dogs are meant to have humans to care for them and they need to be walked and have contact so they can be trained. A dog with no human contact like you are stating , well the dog will never interact with other dogs or humans and it will become lonely. I knew this guy who did the same thing, just fed the dog and kept it in the basement. The dog as it grew developed all sorts of behaviour problems that later on could not be corrected. Why have a dog when you dont have time for it..thats the message i am getting..all the dog is is a possession, not something she cares about or really has time for.

Yes, this is very very cruel way to treat a dog. Dogs are social animals that are use to living in a pack. The dog needs its owners companionship. This is very important as if the dog develops a relationship with its human it will be more obiedient and easier to train.
The dog needs shelter, and if the RSPCA knew that it had no shelter, then they would be insisting that it is given shelter promptly. Your friend really needs to learn how to treat a dog properly - it should be considered one of the family. She could even consider booking it into daycare once or twice a week if she is too busy to spend time with it.
You need to show your friend the responses to your question. I cannot stress how important it is to do the right thing by animals. If you have the money you could start by buying the dog a bed. (a hammok style is really good as it keeps the pets off the cold ground)
If there is a vet, pet store owner, dog trainer, or other responsible sort of person that you could approach, explain to them what you suspect and ask them to spend a few minutes talking with your friend on your behalf, and for the benefit of the dog? If the information comes from a qualified person she may think long and hard about what she is doing and hopefully change.

Your right
yes it it cruel
It maybe has the toys but all dogs need to have human contact otherwise what is the point in getting a dog?
The dog needs walked & to basically feel it has a purpose, which this dog does not. A dog learns from us.
The dog needs shelter from the cold & something warm to lay on, to keep off the draft ideally it should be a bench inside a hut/shed so it can climb onto this with a blanket/straw/hay which ever as long as it can keep warm & if it is hot it will still need the shelter with plenty of fresh water.
Dogs need a variety of food meat/meal tuna etc & they need enough food to feel satisfied not just enough food to take away the hunger.
Your friend is wrong.
If you report her & they see it has food & water all they will do is tell her to get it some were to sleep etc & they will check to make sure that she has complied with there rules if not they can & would take the dog away from her.
I think maybe you should try sit down with her again & talk about it or ask her if she feels it was a mistake getting the pup could you take it?

I think it is definately cruel. I think it is mean first of all to keep a dog outside at all times secondly if he is going to be then give the dog adequate shelter. You should say something again. If she by chance got the dog from the humane society then in her contract it says that she will give the dog shelter, so technically you could be mean and threaten to turn her in. This is how animal cruelty starts people. Sorry I am very passionate on this subject.

It is my opinion yes it is cruel. Neglect comes to mind. I feel people like your friend have no business having living pets, they should stick to stuffed animals. Dogs are pack animals and their human family is most often their pack yet this poor dog is left outside alone. I'll even go out on a limb here and predict this pup will not get the vet care (including dental) that dogs need. If the dog has no shelter animal welfare should be contacted so they can take the dog away.

I think I would call the Humane Society immediately. Your friend may get mad at you...but a friend who would treat a puppy like that would be no friend of mine. At the very least there should at least be a doghouse, plenty of food and water at all times, and time spent with the pup...a walk. tug of war with an old sock..hugs. It deserves better. Better yet, ask her if you can take the dog and find it a new home. The bad thing about the Humane Society is if they don't find a home for it in a certain amount of time it will be put to sleep.

I wouldnt class it as cruel as in complete torture but cruel as in irrisponsible and thoughtless
It will be a hard one for you to deal with given that it is a friend and that you have a different oppinion on the matter.
Unfortunately there are too many people that love the idea of having a pet, get it, but then dont put in the work that they should to give AND get the best out of their new friend. Do you have a dog too? if so it might help if you encourage your friend to go for a regular walk with you and your dog, go walking to a local caffe and have a coffe or something, try and ease her into it and show her a different way, not in words but by your actions. She might pick up on it?
Just a thought

Neglect is a very sad and lonely form of cruelty. the worst part about it, is that its SO hard to prove that the animal is neglected. This is why few orgs like the aspca will try to press charges. its just very hard to prove in a court, that the animal was abused if it had no visible injury and adaquate food/water.
Dogs are social pack animals and need love and a stable environment.
This dog needs to be rescued before it develops destructive behavior, shyness, or even worse ...aggressiveness.
Call your local shelter and see what they can suggest. They're there to help.

I don't know that it would qualify "legally" as animal cruelty but it doesn't sound like this person is dedicated to owning a pet and that is tragic. What part of the country is this in? Sometimes it just depends on the laws of the city or county you are in. Good luck on getting through to your friend and I hope you find a way to get this puppy a happier home.

I don't think your friend is treating her pup the right way. Puppy need lots of attention and communication. When my dog is still a pup I spent lots of time with him. I walk him twice a day. Play with him, teach him the right way to go poo or pee. I even went to pets mart and join the puppy training class with him. If you really love a pet you should treat them like your own children.. That is what it think.
I think it is very cruel to treat a pup like that
If your friend doesn't know how to treat her pup than you should advise her to give up her pup to other more responsible people.
Well at pets mart there are books, flyer's and assistant that can teach or help you with pets problem. Please ask your friend to seek for help before she thinks what she did is nothing wrong.
