You HAVE to neuter it. It's the only responsible thing. A male who is not neutered before he's fully "mature" WILL develop the habit of spraying everything with VERY foul smelling urie that will be almost impossible to get out. If he develops this habit, then even neutering won't necessarily stop it.
on the other hand, a male neutered by 6 months, before they start spraying, is almost 100% guaranteed not to spray, and makes a gentle, mellow, friendly pet.
Females also need to be fixed. THey sometimes spray while in heat. They will drive you crazy while they're in heat, and can have up to 3 litters a year, I believe. That's alot of kittens to find homes for. Most won't find good homes and will die one way or another.
Neutering a male should DEFINITELY be done at 6 months at the OLDEST. Some places will do it from 4-6 months, so, if you can find a place that will, 5 months is a good time.
Speying should be done as soon after 4 months as possible. As with humans, girls "mature" faster, and a female can get pregnant as young as 4 months. That's the equivalent of an 11 year old girl who just started her period getting pregnant. Not good for the kitty.
Many vets will try to make you wait till 6 months. That's okay. But if it's a girl keep it inside from 4 months until speyed!!!

Get it neutered as it keeps the cat population down of stray cats, and also it stops them spraying all over the house, 6 months old is the best time, have had a kitten and yes he was neutered at 6 months, he is a big happy tabby!!!

Please consider getting your kitten from a pound or rescue organisation. Getting pure-bred supports the industry of breeding animals with certain traits and "in-bred" characteristics, that are not always in the animal's best interests. Of course you should de-sex your animal for the following two reasons: First, it will not roam the neighborhood in search of sex if it is a male (and expose itself to fights and contracting feline AIDS) or keep you awake with "calling" as it cries out for a suitor and it's suitors (read plural) call back. Secondly, neutered males lose that distinctive tom-cat urine smell - and they have a far less tendency to roam, spray on furniture, etc. I can't believe the best answer for wanting to know if your cat is pregnant! Get your cat speyed at approx 5-6months old,and neutered at six. If she is by chance, pregnant, then it is only a bit "messier" for the vet when he speys her - and there are too many unwanted kittens in the world. If you can't afford to have her speyed or him neutered, then approach the Humane Society who can do this for cheap or free, better yet, if you can't afford to have your animal fixed, can you really afford to have an animal?
All of my cats over the years have been "moggies" and strays that have come into my life - I have never gone in search of them. They have all given me joy, and every one of them has been fixed. I now rescue neighborhood toms and get them fixed when they are tame enough to capture and take off to a vet.

Yes, it is best to neuter your animal. Unless you are a professional and dedicated breeder (not in it for the money but for the love of the breed), ALWAYS spay or neuter your pet. Backyard breeding and "accidental" breeding is NEVER okay, in my opinion. I had my cats sterilized at 5 months although I've seen some shelters do it even earlier. Your best bet would be to consult a vet. Enjoy your new baby :-)

It definitely needs to spayed/neutered for the reasons stated above, but to answer your questions many vets are now doing what they call an early spay/neuter that can be done as young as 8 weeks. It is completely safe, they generally recover quicker from the anesthesia the younger they are and then you don't have to worry about male cat starting to spray before you get neutered.

YES you have to neuter a kitten, please. But if you get a girl, you have to spay her. There are too many homeless animals out there dont add to the problem. Consider rescuing a cat, before buying one. Pet shop cats will always fine homes, its the rescues and shelter cats that need our love asap.
They need to be fixed around 5 months, if you get a male the sooner the better, since you dont want him to learn to spray.

Please have yours pets ( cats and dogs ) spayed or neuter. You can have your pets altered as early as 8 weeks, but it's best to wait until they have had their vaccinations, which is every 3 weeks ,so when you start at 6 weeks then 9 weeks and then 12 weeks so get your last set of vaccination and altered at the same time!!!!

Yes it is best to have a cat neutered because it protects their future health - female cats will be far less likely to get mammary or ovarian cancer, male cats will be safe from prostate and testicular cancer. Not to mention stopping them from adding to the already vast over-population of cats!
Cats can be spayed/castrated from 5 months of age in usual circumstances.

Best is to go and rescue a kitten from the SPCA that's already been fixed. It'll be cheaper too, and you'll be saving a kitten from a sure death.
