Never, ever lie on a lie detector test.
Here's how it works:
You will be asked a series of questions... usually about drug use, previous employment and miscellaneous background ideas.
They will not be recorded by polygraph. Some departments even have you fill out the whole interview before this round. The purpose is to introduce you to what will happen, in order to calm your nerves.
After this, you will typically be given the questions again... three times... in different order each round. There will be at least two bate questions... example: "I was born in the United States."
The purpose for this is to accurately read your response, which is always yes or no.
There are two common tests given... voice stress analysis (explains itself) or polygraph (measures heart rate, sweat levels and involuntary muscle contractions).
Never ever tell a single lie on the test. Most departments will not turn you down because of marijuana use... especially if it was one time and three years prior. What will get you is lying about it.
Basically, they want to see that you are mature enough to stand up and admit your faults... to show integrity. Your superiors know that everybody in the world has skeletons in the closet. Failing a lie detector will automatically disqualify your employment.
If the agency is spending the time and money to put you through this test, then they must be interested in hiring you. I cannot be more clear... just tell the truth!

If your applying in south Florida there is no need to lie.Smoking the weed NEVER hurt anyone. Plus they hire people who shoot to kill, profile drivers, and daily take their problems to work with them, they have the power, We must assume that only 1% of the bad police are ever discovered, only those caught in the act. I wish you the best of luck, and will probably see you on TV some day as you will most likely end up like the others and let this all consuming power run you over.

Don't lie about it tell them just what you told us! Now a days a certain amount of experimental drug use in ones youth is accepted and not an automatic ground for refusal to become a police officer, or a CIA agent, or FBI agent or any government official including president! Don't believe others when they tell you that you are to stupid to become a police officer. It is a known fact that if you are to smart you will not be accepted!!!

DON'T LIE. Just be upfront and honest. Using marijuana, three years ago, will not automatically disqualify you. However, lying will!
ETA: Just wanted to say, if you're already trying to find ways to get around rules-maybe you shouldn't be a Cop.

It is very difficult to lie. Tell the truth and you might be considered as a police officer.

Don't lie about it. Tell them you did it once (if that is all you did) experimentally and decided it was wrong and will not do it again.
If you lie, and they will catch you, your sunk.
If you tell the truth and are honest, they may give you a waiver on it.

Yea, you'll never be a police officer. But if you give me your address I'll send you a spatula so you can be a burger flipper and McDonalds.
