Most of my friends have children (babies to around 5 years old) and as our reception is really informal and being held at home we want our friends to feel they can bring the kids if they want to rather than having to fork out for a babysitter. What can we provide to help keep the kids happy? I've thought of things like colouring books and pens, any suggestions from people with kids would be great!!!!

I'm going to download colouring pictures from the net- try the crayola website and provide crayons for the meal- they're not really sitting down kids, but at least parents will be able to say colour this and that and then you can get down type thing and have a distraction so they can sit and eat for a minute or two in peace! It's an august wedding so we are asking friends with kids to bring any outdoor games they have, balls and frisbes, maybe some outdoor games- jenga is cool, cos they can just build with it if they get fed up of playing by the rules. We are looking into a bouncy castle- but be very wary with regards to insurance etc and who's responsible for any accidents- it can be nasty, so be clear about it before anything goes wrong. Bubbles are definately cool. We're also suggesting that kids either don't come too formally dressed, or come with a change of clothes so parents don't have to worry about them running about and being a little crazy. We have a good outdoor space and mostly the kids all know each other, so I think they'll get along fine.

if you hire a bouncy castle it might result in some bumps and bruises, my kids always come home from after school club with notes saying they slammed into somebody else, you'd better make sure it's supervised....

maybe for younger kids a ball pool might be nice. If you want to stay away from messy stuff Lego could work. All kids love Lego, even adults love Lego. Dressing up clothes are also a safe and not too messy option.

My friend had two older kids (12-14) babysitting the youngsters & they were dreesed up in costumes & they played songs, they were all dancing & it was very nice. They had balloons & painted the faces of the children. It was like a party for the kids & the parents felt them near them & safe.

However ask the parents before... some can't wait for a few hours away from their little screamers! :)))

Kids love variety they get bored doing the same thing every day. Do something different each day and don't forget to take them out and about. Children love the outdoor life and the walk will do you good as well. With other kids about they will be able to keep each other amused. Good Luck

generally kids will play with each other, so nothing else is really needed, if you have a big back yard a few soft balls, also if you feel it would be nice you can go to your local training centre or collage and ask about hiring someone to look after the kids so that the parents can mingle with out the worry of their kids, it will also be alot cheaper to hire a child care worker in training instead of a professional

I know it seems like a lot of hard work but its worth it and everyone will certainly be grateful and remember you for it, why dont you make a list of all the children that are going to be there and make up lucky packets for each of them according to the age and sex of the child. things like puzzles and colouring in books and just little things to keep them occupied, children get bored so quickly so a variety of things would do wonders.

A bouncy castle would be great! They come and put it up and take it away, it is about £100 but would be nice if weather is nice outside, keep them amused for hours!

My two year old went to a bouncy castle party and had a great time, there were no accidents, they were supervised, you could have an outdoor reception then everyone would be there

set up a table or area just for them. Candy centerpieces, coloring books etc. Also (depending on your menu) have a few kid friendly foods. Chicken nuggets, etc. This keeps them occupied and allows the adults to have some fun too.

Kids don't need all that crap. If there are going to be other kids there they will have fun together, running around and screaming. If you have activities planned they will feel like they are in school. Just have some balloons maybe get some bubbles and they will be entertained.

Rubber balls, different sizes. Balloons already blown up. Be sure to have at least one teenager who can "babysit" and supervise. Mostly they will entertain themselves but they may get to screaming too loudly, and somebody has to watch they don't get hurt. Consider paper hats, paper clothes (take newspapers, spray-paint them, they get stiff when dried. Make fancy clothes out of the painted paper. Go to the library and look up kids games and see what they have available. Good luck. Have fun.
