What plant or insect of the high desert of CA can cause a purplish spatter looking rash and swelling?

My friend was at Joshua Tree over the weekend and came back w/ a developed purple spatter looking rash above his socks. Also both of his ancles are swollen. He also is complaining of pain (not a burning) when his skin is touched or pulled. I looked at it, and it looks like he stomped on grapes in his socks, because the rash level is abrupt at the edge.

I would suggest your friend to see a doctor, if it is both sides then it could be allergic, if it is one side then it could be a bug bite, diagnosis is made easily by seeing this kind of things, good luck
