The best engine for your Ranger is the 4.0L V6 like the one that you have now only with compression.
In order to put a 5.0 mustang engine, or any other V8, in your Ranger you will have to remove the heater and A/C.
Look into getting a turbo motor out of a Thunderbird, that might perk it up a bit.

Sounds like the timing belt/chain has broken. Engines don't just lose compression instantly unless valve timing is off/wrong (by the belt breaking). An engine loses compression gradually over high mileage unless catostrophic failure happens which a t-belt isn't, install new one for less than $200 if you do it yourself or closer to $800+ at a shop, that would be new belt, cam and crank seals, and H2O pump.

the 4.0 is the right engine for this truck. With all the stuff you would have to change besides the engine, like the mounts, cooling, wiring, computer, transmission to name a few. With what your describing sounds like it could be repaired. I can't see a 4.0 loosing compression that fast. I have seen some with over 1M miles on them and they still run strong.

Without a lot of modifications its best to replace the engine with the same size, or you have to replace the computer module, and depending on the engine have to modify the front end to accept it.
I would first check to make sure the timing chain hasn't broke or skipped time.

sounds like the timing jumped or broke. when it dies all of a sudden or diesels when you shut it off and then loose all compression all of a sudden then check timing belt and valves too

Replace the truck. There is no other engine to replace it with unless you go with another 4.0.
