preference? You know how a lot of people --or atleast a few[relatives/ folks close to you] try and convince you to "go their personal way of believing" yet totally disrespecting your beliefs. Maybe your Buddhist, Wiccan, Jewish, Christian, Agnostic, Atheist, or ect.
What was the most cruel or tasteless thing said to you? How did you respond and feel? Most importantly [or close to it anyway]--what did you say to make a stand for your own individual beliefs? As we ALL have a RIGHT to honoring OUR own belief system.
I'm curious how other's handle their experiences

There is not any one thing, rather a set of beliefs...Despite the fact that some people (very few, actually)call me judgmental about my beliefs & vengeful if I have been wronged. With most people I know and care about, I respect them enough to offer my honest opinion. However, with the people I mentioned above, I listen, without verbalizing anything (in order not to get in a go nowhere arguement), to these same people who say these terrible things about me in attempt to see what is motivating them or if I will actually be able to get anywhere with them. I think they may be transferring their own feelings onto someone (maybe anyone) who thinks very differently from themselves. This is getting to the point where I am considering writing off my closest family members, and perhaps leaving a stable job, because they become mean and so overwhelmed by fear that that it has turned into mindless, misdirected hate. I do know alot of people from alot of different beliefs and think that makes life more interesting. However, the most hateful, biased and (fear based) narrow minded statements came from the people I care most about (they do all share a set of beliefs, but I don't think they are the only group like this, so I am not sure how helpfull disclosing this is here) I am bothered most by the hatefull, racist and sexist remarks I hear because these remarks come from people closest to me (& one with the same upbringing!!!) I am hurt because I try to find explinations for the things in the world that bother me (one of the things about myself for which I am most proud), and I am torn down because of it!

My worst experience of a religious nature was as an 8 year old, waking up in the middle of the night to my fanatical JW aunt screaming at me that I was going to hell.

I handled it by jumping out the window and running away.

EDIT
When I was 12, my father came into my room and saw a copy of the Ten Commandments taped to my dresser mirror. He tore them down and cussed my "idiocy" a blue streak.

I handled that by never letting me, religion and Dad in the same room together ever again.

In my teen years, I was berated by EVERYONE about my non Christian beliefs. (SURPRISE!)

I just internalized that.

In my adult life I have encountered many non tolerant people.

I handle that in different ways, depending on the person's demeanor. Tit for tat.

"your grandmother wasn't a baptized Christian so she's burning in Hell for all eternity" Hurt me most deeply but similar statements suggesting I should accept one persons version of Christianity or suffer a similar fate offends me almost as much. Less rabid and non Christians have explained their beliefs to me without such dire threats. With the "Ours is the one true faith" people I usually tell them my god is a crazy red-headed lady named Eris and offer the ordain them as an Erisian pope.and they walk away mumbling prayers. Offering to tell them how Satan really rules the world works too.

I was debating with someone and said true Christians seek righteousness, peace, love, forgiveness, etc, and they replied that my true vision was the Crusades, Inquisition, and Dark Ages. I replied about how those things were totally contrary to what I sought, and then I told them I would never debate them again. They continued talking but I never said a word to them again.

Thankfully my family are very supportive of my beliefs and encourage me... My mum doesn't go to church herself, but she gets on at me if i don't! Which is kind of funny when I think about it...
